Just wondering, from the contractor's perspective, how do you know if a potential customer is wasting your time?

I'm a first-time homeowner who is not familiar with construction rates or design/code limitations. I just completed my first major project($50K+) and was pleased with the work and the GC. However, I too met with (did not meet with) a number of contractors that blew off appointments or seemed interested but then did not return bids. One contractor, who is a poster on this thread, seemed interested, followed up to with me to see where I was with the plans and then, when I had everything in place, blew off my calls for a price.

So again, to build on Tom's questions, what is the customer doing to make you (the contractor) feel that your time is being wasted? Perhaps it's something we (the serious customer) can work on.

Likewise, can you understand that when appointments are broken or when calls are unreturned, the potential customer's time is also being wasted?

Jersey Boy,

After reading your responses on this thread, as well as a number of other threads that you posted on, I retract all of my positive comments about you. You are a punk -- you waste people's time and don't add an value. I hate to say it but Mitten and Pat Scanlan (whether they are the same person or not) are right. You are wrong and owe Mitten an apology

Jersey Boy,

don't insult me by saying I am the same as the Mitten. I am not the same person. And I can prove it. here goes:

You are a bad person and should get off MOL -- I am sure everyone agrees with me -- and they can prove it by not responding to my comment. If you think Jersey Boy is a nice guy, then please stick up for him. In retrospect, I guess that proves nothing, but it made me feel better. now go away forever.

Kudos PMart and Tom for getting this thread back on topic.

Here's some irony - the very same modest sized project that I've been getting blown off on has evolved into a potentially major project.

Gee, am I going to consider the DUO or the other contractor that wasted my time by not following through on the originally project that I clearly articulated to them before they came over?

NOT

Now here ya go. What about this? Ya got to know that cyberspace is a rough and tumble place and while it might not be frontier land, I think that more than a few of us are packing concealed ID's. I mean ya find yourself in a bad situation on a thread, what d'ya do? Ya hit 'em with a drive by post using a seemingly anonymous name and chill for a while. Who's the wiser?

What we need is a rumble involving all the alias names. One giant free for all, steel cage match, last name standing, takes it all!

What say ye, MOL? Thunderdrome..... scruffy man!!!!!!!

Hmmmmmm! Crazy indeed. Perhaps there are tests that we could perform that would reveal the true identities of these imposters that have invaded our message board? I know for a fact that JB is not X-Man. (At least I'm relatively, ah.. make that pretty sure, ah.......... somewhat sure?)

I said:

"XMan,

Squarehead and Mitten are the same poster."

Mitten said:

"I had made peace with you on this thread, but now you claim we're all the same poster?

X-Man and Squarehead lack the coherence, elegance and charisma that my notes are characterized by.

Claiming we're all the same person is a cop out. C'mon, you can do better than that :-)

Mitten"

And:

"Yes, I've had my scraps with X-Man and Scanlan. How does that make us the same person?

Mitten"

Flail away! Those were copied from THIS VERY THREAD!

I must say that you guys are getting kind of ridiculous.

However, I've pieced things together and have concluded the following:

Jersey Boy and Pat Scanlan are indeed the same person - classic juxtaposition of a fake name and real name

Mitten Reckitt - frightfully unstable.

X-Man is a fireman in Kearney, who was neglected as a child and is now lashing out.

MittenReckitt...geez, is sort of unstable -

I have tried to stay out of the frey because on a serious note, I hate when these value added subjects come down to childish nonsense. However, given my name has been dragged through the mud, I must ask you all put an end to the game of "who is who". I do not know who Bears Brother, Mitten, etc are. I do know I am not them. Please leave me out of this and lets get back to helping each other, not trying to hurt each other.

Shame on you Jersey Boy for starting this in the first place with your rude post. I would hope all reading this thread see him for his real colors -- a jerk. And if you really had balls, you would post your name when making accusation (like I will do right now)

Pat, your calling JB a jerk is a clear violation of the MOL rules, which is a personal attack.

Linking like-minded-posters is not a personal attack, it's simply pointing out helpfull information for those of us who care.

Your multi-personality approach to the board may be entertaining to you, but it's the type of behavior that eventually kills a Message Board, so JB is right to point it out when he sees it....it's the only way integrity is maintained.

Smarty,

You are right, I should not have called him a jerk -- my apologies. Why are you accusing me of a "multi-personality approach"? And the best way to keep integrity maintained on this forum is not to post the following types of statements (exact language from you friend Jersy Boy)

"This thread is dumb. If you were a contractor..."

Do you think that is good behavior for the board. And stop accusing me of multi-personality. Call out your friend for being rude, and then all of the sudden I am the bad guy. Nice, real nice}}

There is a big difference between saying:
"This thread is Dumb" vs. "You are an idiot".

Discussing the post is 100% above board, regardless of tone.

JB- your first statement was very rude.

Smarty, Mr Scanlan, and my other esteemed posters (save JB)

I agree with the assessment of JB's first post being very rude.

But the reason it was rude was that it wasn't commenting on the issue of the post, it was commenting on the merits of the thread.

Last I checked this was a free country. Who is JB to be sitting back in his LazyBoy deciding what thread is dumb and what isn't?

That's the whole spirit of this board - if you don't like the thread or have nothing to add, sit it out, play with your dog, lance some of the boils off your butt...do something ELSE.

Now that was a rant!

Sorry I was rude. There was a post following that comment that the thread was dumb that discussed the topic. I think I made a point about WHY I thought the thread was dumb. There was a brief discussion between Mitten and myself about the reasons contractors don't follow up on small projects.

I'm not sure why we aren't discussing THAT anymore. Maybe it has to do with Pat Scanlan saying that EVERYTHING I ever posted was dumb. And Xman....

Pat, that's why you got dragged "into the frey."

Actually, I don't think there was a problem until I mentioned latin terms for debating fallacies.

J.B.

I'll admit, using latin on the home fix it thread may have been dumb.

Being interested, quoting jobs, looking at plans, inspecting existing conditions, exchanging ideas, value enginering, return phone calls, following through, are all very nice things.

Until there is a contract in place, it doesn't mean sh*t.

Construed rudeness, dumbness, or perceived lack of ettiquette are not crimes or illegal.

Remember, the contractor is checking the homeowner as well.

Just because you have a mercedes in the drive along with a big bank account, doesn't mean that every contractor wants to grovel to get your work.

Thank you Jesus that I work union commercial construction and don't have to deal with uninformed, unrealistic, unloved, unappreciated, & unstable homeowners.

Tom, congrats for not being in contracting. You are clearly not tempermentally inclined for the job, given your lack of respect for the average homeowner.

Contractors don't have to grovel to get my work. But they do have to bother to return with the estimate. My bank account isn't gigantic, but it does have significant money earmarked for contractors who are responsible.
