Our 1920s circa door has a busted original handle. It's the kind with a knob on the inside but a push down mechanism on the outside and the whole thing is connected (but broken!) We'd rather keep the door and replace the hardware but home depot doesn't carry the hardware. Any local hardware stores that do?

Cowgirl,
Try Lowes on Morris Ave. and Route 22 (Near Toys-R-Us)They carry a better selection than the Depot. You may need to try a locksmith, though that may get pricey. There are also a good num,ber of websites that carry old door hardware. Just Google what you are looking for.

I don't think any homecenter carries the old mortice locksets Cowgirl is talking about. A local locksmith might be able to repair the lockset, especially if he has been stockpiling parts. New mortice exterior locksets are pricey.

You can also fill the mortice in the door and use a regular lockset, although this is less than an ideal solution.

Here you go. I see them all the time in This Old House magazine.

http://www.vandykes.com/subcategory/20/

This should bring you directly into door hardware.

Or try:

Good luck in your search!

Moe's Hardware in Morristown. They have a showroom.

Try to go during the week. If you go on Saturdays, go very early if you want to speak with someone.

Former Cowgirl,

As another do-it-yourself-hole, I have the inside track on this.

Schneider's Hardware in West Orange. It's on Main Street. They WILL have what you need, and if they don't they'll get it, and if they can't get it, you don't need it.

It says so on the door.

Thanks everyone. We ended up going to Schneider's who sent us to the locksmith down the street who sent us to their supplier in Bloomfield who had the right hardware but the mechanism on the replacement did not line up with our cylinders. Basically, the recomendation is to get one of these conversion kits that allows you to put a modern handle on the door. But they recommend professional installation.

Old homes...Has anyone used a conversion kit?

Cowgirl:

Can you let me know who you use for installation? I've been meaning to get mine fixed/replaced for quite some time and have not been able to entice anyone to come out and take a look.

Thanks much.
