When I stepped outside yesterday morning I noticed there was a sinkhole about 5 inches across in my driveway. It was not there the day before. Getting down on my hands an knees and peering into the hole it looks like there's a kind of tunnel running under the asphalt. I'm guessing maybe it's due to all the rain we've been having. My driveway is only a couple of years old, so needless to say this is a bit upsetting. Has anyone experienced anything like this? What did you do to fix it? How much did it cost? |

A guess is that the contractor didn't put down and compact a gravel base several inches thick and just paved over sand or soil. The gravel would allow the water to flow without creating a tunnel. With dirt or sand the surface has been eroded. |

Okay, I have a tangent. When something like this happens, as happened to me when we had a patio installed, do you call the original guy back to fix it? I now realize he was a hack, and I don't really ever want to see his face again. But, I have a hole. I'm afraid that the next guy, if he's legit, will want to re-do the whole thing rather than patch a crappy job. What to do? J.B. |
