My neighbor 's cats are using my yard for their toilets. They have at least three cats, and seem to be out door all the time. How do I get rid of them? I have not spoken to my neighbor about the cats. Any quick solution's without having to put them to rest:

Jose, talk to your neighbors. Usually, if the cats have a tended-to cat litter that they have aaccess to indoors, they won't use the outside for a litter.

By the way, maybe they're mine...

If you have no luck with the neighbor, talk to the guys at Millstone - they have fox urine, which wards off other critters. Maybe it will work on cats. There's also "don't go here" sold at pet stores. Good luck. If you have kids, cats using your yard as a bathroom is a health hazzard.

I doubt the neighbors can do anything to control this so I'd look to other solutions.....I'm fairly certain that the type of Mulch you use will help/hinder this along...(I assume this is going on in the landscaping, not the grass?)

Trap them and turn them over to animal control. That's what I've been doing. Our lawn and gardens are like litter pans.. If the cat has no collar, then I consider it a stray.

One of the most disgusting smells to cats is citrus fruit. Maybe you can spray some lemon juice on the perimeter of your property.

sometimes on the grass, My vegitable garden, they even sleep on the roof of my car. I have tried some of the suggested solutions but to no avail.

thanks

We were having that problem as well - our neighbor's cats were using our garden in the front as a toilet. As you walked up our front steps you would smell it - it was vile. Someone recommended moth balls and it worked like a charm. Smelling the moth balls in the beginning was not much better, but that smell faded and I guess the cats have moved on.

Michael - I think it would be really considerate if you checked in with your neighbors. We love our neighbors, but get frustrated by their army of animals who prefer to use our yard instead of their own. We've said things about the dogs, but figured we had to take the cat issue on ourselves.

If all fails a dog would be an easy solution.

I think this is really a problem when the male cat still has balls (I admit I forget the proper terminology). Your house is part of his territory. You need to spray something else to protect it. I have a cat (no balls) who now protects my property from the ballsy sprayer that used to come by all the time. Again, it the cat is poopin on your property, that may be because the owner does not really tend to the litters inside, or does not regularly let it in to go.

If the neighbors are unresponsive, I'd turn the hose on him. Won't hurt the cat, but it'll scare him away.........hopefully permanently.

Phyllis,

I have nearly (2) acres of property and don't care what they think since their chickens poop on my deck and the other neighbors (2) horse sized Rotts do a number on the lawn.
Fair game.

Better yet - red - cayenne pepper. More, um, disturbing.

I have a different problem. One cat. S/he's wandered around here for awhile, nearly a year, and is lucky the dog isn't a real cat hunter. This beast had disappeared for the last 3-4 months, but is back. Nowadays, this little **** runs directly into my driveway (through bushes)every time I pull in & scares the tar out of me each and every time.

Aside from the cruel, obvious, what might we do to discourage driveway roadkill?

Actually I've used WHITE pepper. When we moved in here the lady before us had like 16 cats -- before we got all the carpets taken up, our cats started marking where hers had. White pepper did the trick - I've never heard of black pepper, but I have heard of spraying diluted Tabasco sauce on plants to keep deer away.

You can ask your neighbors if they know of anything they know their cats don't like... or if they see their cats on your car to repremand them. I don't know your relationship with your neighbors, but if it is nice, usually you guys can just brainstorm. If there's nothing else you can do, you might be able to just clap at the cat and say no when you see it around you...

Upondaroof, that's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard - sometimes cats get out that are inside cats. My cat doesn't have a collar because he kept ripping it off, and I was afraid of it getting caught on something. He's very friendly and I'd hate to think that one day he was a few steps away from the house and someone would just pick him up and turn him to someone that would put him to sleep. How thoughtless and horrifically inhumane of you. The least you could do is post a picture here and give it to the JAC - but you know what? You should just leave them alone, do you pick up deer and call animal control?

flugermongers,
Do you want to know what the most disgusting thing is in my opinion? Its a five year old child tracking cat crap through the house and the perimeter of my home smelling like a feline whore house because some tree hugging, save the animals, nut job can't control their cats or is feeding feral strays. And this, from the owner of two cats,(of whom I think the world) before you go for your guns!

I've discussed this problem with my neighbors and animal control. I got no where with the neighbors. Animal control advised me to trap and bring them in, (the cats) provided they have no collars. If they are strays, its the most humane thing to do. They make every effort to adopt out the creatures.. If someone is missing their pet, the first place to check should be the pound. In fact, I've let it be known exactly what I'm doing in my neighborhood. I live in Parsippany and the area I'm in is under siege from cats and the township knows this. If I don't take care of the problem, no one else will. I'd be happy to leave them alone, if, they would leave me alone, but I'm living here and my grandson visits daily and for me its a health, as well as a quality of life issue and I will prevail!

(And no I don't trap deer. Deer are not a problem for us since we don't live next to a preserve.)

Um, I'm not sure what 5 year old you're talking about, but if there's one tracking cat crap through your house, I'd assume it is yours, and I'd suggest you watch your child. As for the perimiter of your house smelling, white pepper usually keeps cats from peeing there.

If you keep turning in cats you're going to cost someone their love... and most pounds, even if they say they will try to adopt them out, just kill them. I'm glad to know YOUR quality of life is so much more important than the cats - and by the way, if cat urine is your biggest problem in your quality of life, well then, I envy you.

I own 2 cats (which I love dearly and they are indoor cats)

Flugermongers and I are neighbors, and we've had the occasional cat issues and discussed them - I tried the white pepper trick when her cats were making my garden a litter box and it worked well.

Truth be told (and I've told Fluger this in person, so I don't think it's airing our dirty cat laundry) I'd prefer that Fluger's cats were indoor cats because we can't have a bird feeder anymore, and the cats devoured all of our chipmunks.

A few times I caught the cats "playing" with the 'munks, but a while ago I found the cat playing with a headless chippy body and I haven't seen any chipmunks since.

My mother has 3 outdoor cats and we have many catty debates re: outdoor vs. indoor.

I think that because cats aren't native to our area they should stay indoors - my mother counters that humans make a more damaging biological footprint than felines do.

And so it goes...

flugermongers,

Before I get started here, I'd like everyone to know that I've pulled my "self kickingass machine out of storage and dusted it off, since I know I'll probably be needing it shortly.

Let's get something straight here. I'm not a demonic, sadistic, animal hater. I love cats, at least my cats, that is. I feel as many do that animals were created to live with and enhance peoples lives in one way or another, be it as a pet or an entree. My definition of a pet is an animal that is controlled by its master. Hmmmm.. Maybe that's a bit over the top for some. So let's just say we should exercise some restraint over its actions. Let's say that a dog, a parakeet, a goldfish, a turtle, a gerbil and even a cat, etc., is a domesticated animal and being domesticated it lives within your home. You wouldn't open the door and say "Hey Rover, why don't you take yourself out for a walk." Would you open the window and the cage door and let Tweety go for a fly? How about throwing the betas in the brook and letting them swim home?
A cat is not a free ranging animal and a pet all at the same time. If you let your cat loose on society and it suffers an injury, death, gets in a fight, kills another "pet" or does property damage, then who's responsibility is that? A pet's owner, master, companion or whatever should look out for its well being.

We have a large extended family and several yearly family events on a regular basis, which involve entertaiment for the children, such as Easter egg hunts and lawn games, so you kind of see where my health and quality of life issues are coming from. Or maybe not, probably not, so I'll make a deal with you. PL me with your address and telephone number and the next time I detain one of your furry, feline friends, I'll deport him / her to your home. I'm sure Lydia will love you for that.

Don't you dare!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the chipmunks will return - I sprayed extra citrus and sprinkled tons of pepper today.
