This must not be an exciting topic since no one answered my last thread, but I could really use some help? |

Just went through this....here's what I've found: 1. Home Depot/Lowes can get you French doors, either off-the-shelf (if they fit) or 3 week order if you want a wider standard size, than is offered in the aisles. They are both Masonite Doors, but at Lowes they are Masonite private label. 2. If you need a different size, go to 84-lumber to get this done, likely they will provide you with a Simpson door, and it will be 3X more expensive than the off-the-shelf door from Home Depot. If you post your sizes required (ie Your rough/opening) I may be able to provide more insight. |

Try Jaeger Lumber on Morris Avenue in Union. They have all the catalogues and can probably order what you need. Obviously, custom is going to be more expensive than stock. |

We just had one installed - bought off the shelf at Home Depot. Masonite, as someone mentioned in above thread. I'd check Home Depot. |

Wow! Thanks so much for all the info. You know, a contractor once mentioned that we'd have to have the french doors custom (since opening was narrow)but I never actually measured the doorway myself. I think I will start there (thanks a mil smartyjones)and if its not standard then fine we custom order. And Jaeger put in my garage door. . .is that the same Jaeger referred to here? I thought they only did garage doors.? I have to tell you folks that this message board has saved me so much time and money...thanks again

I ended up visiting my neighbors house this weekend and I measure thier french doors (forgot to measure the rough opening). The doors are 18inches wide and 7 ft high. Went to Home Depot and they said they could order 18inch doors but that they don't come 7ft high. Bummer. Any ideas. . .I guess at this point, Jaeger would be able to help? |

First, measure the opening at your house. The neighbors may look the same, but yours may be different. Jaeger or another full service lumber yard has catalogues for just about every manufacturer. They can also reccomend a contractor to install the doors for you. Another possibility is to buy a 36 inch door and mount that. |

(Drumroll please)...the measurement for the opening is 36" wide x 7ft high! I think I may either scrap the idea altogether or consider one of the other suggestions of buying a single french door (or one with glass panes). |

Cwalk, I am looking for french doors that are probably the exact same dimensions. I would be interested in what you finally decide. I am trying to enclose our vestibule, the previous owners had louvered doors there. A single door won't work for me as it wouldn't open all the way (would hit the bottom of our stairs) |

We did a single french door....it looks beautiful! 10 panels......You can likley get that standard, or at most with 3 week delivery time from Home Depot or Lowes for about $180. |

Is that a trimmed opening or a rough opening? Trimmed is finished with jamb material and casing [like a picture frame]around it.Rough opening is bare studs.A twin door unit[divided lights,2 doors]would come as a pre-hung unit which would be installed into the rough opening and then be re-trimmed with casing.Or,you could buy 2-18" doors and have them installed into your already trimmed opening which would keep your casings and jambs consistent with the other existing doors. The only problem with the second option is that due to settling and other considerations, square and plumb,2 important factors in door hanging, might be hard to achieve, and nothing stands out worse than an incorrectly hung door, especially in a high visability area.In any event,Dreyers Lumber on River Rd. in Chatham has a great millwork division on the 2nd floor.973 635 5151 |
