I have a regular brick fireplace that has built in shelves on one side and wraps around to a plain regular wall on the other side. The mantel that is there currently resembles a bookshelf of sorts with hooks screwed into it (for Xmas stockings I'm sure. . .)

I don't know if fireplaces come in standard sizes, or can you buy a mantel "off the rack" or does it have to be custom made, or if I can find one at a salvage place or what.

I've seen a few online (see att.) that are over $1000 !!! Just curious if that is the going price or if those are "high end" or what?

And who would install that type of thing? Any contractor?

Cwalk, there is a thread from a week or so ago on the subject of mantels and I would suggest taking a look for it.
