Redoing kitchen... don't want to go overboard though! I heard that their cabinets with wood doors are good. What do you think?

Actually, Consumer Reports gives Ikea an excellent rating (for the price though).
I think if you are not planning on living in your home for more than 10 years or so then this is a good way to go. I think all their cabinets lean toward the modern edge.

When we bought our apt. in Hoboken in 1998, the previous owners had redone the cabinets and countertops with rather nice looking IKEA cabinets (wood with greenish glass on some of the cabinet doors) and butcherblock on the counters. It all held up fine for the next five years until we moved. And it was wearing well even then.

We're quite happy with the IKEA cabinets we installed about 3 years ago. The styles are more limited than a custom cabinet maker, but fine if you're looking for something contemporary. They're not even that hard to put together, just a little time consuming. I hired a pro to actually install them, though. Anything that heavy hanging on a wall, I don't mess around with it.

I installed IKEA cabinets in our previous home. We really liked them. The only thing we noticed was that they would dent if hit hard enough because they are some type of particle board. Otherwise, they looked great and were 'relative easy' to install

I have a few Ikea cabinets. (My kitchen is a do-it-yourself mishmosh.) They have been wonderful -- easy to hang, good-looking, and durable so far (going on a decade). For the price especially, I consider them a great value.

I installed IKEA cabinets in our last house. Many styles are modern, but they do have a few that give the feel of older styles. They have one that simulates a beadboard panelled door and another that looks like a recessed panel door painted a cream color. From what I have seen, the Ikea cabinets are the same quality as other well known brands made from furniture grade "engineered wood". The difference is that you need to assemble the cabinet boxes, which if you have ever put any furniture items together, is not that hard but somewhat time consuming. The upper cabinets are easier to hang than standard cabinets because they use a European rail system for the uppers. Basically, you screw the rail to the wall making sure you screw into the studs. Its easier than hanging each cabinet individually because you level the rail as you install it. This ensures that all your uppers will be level. You then attach the cabinets to the rail. The base ones are easy to level because they sit on adjustable legs. We put granite counters on ours. When we were getting ready to buy the cabinets, we got an estimate from HD for Kraftmaid cabinets (cabinets only - not installation) and that was about $12,000. We got the Ikea cabinets for a little over $4000.

For *intense* discussions of Ikea kitchens, search on this forum. People seem very positive about them. I've also read that some will just buy the boxes and use custom doors - which provides many more options.
