Can anyone recommend a company for mold removal/remediation? We have lovely black mold spreading across our basement. There's Mr. Mold, Anco and others in the phone book and wondering if one was better than the other. Thanks! |

Is your basement damp? If so, you need to dry out your basement or the mold will return. A dehumidifier might do the trick. As far as mold removal is concerned, where is it growing. If it is on stone walls, you could scrub it yourself with a bleach solution (1/2 cup in a couple of gallons of water should do the trick). I think you can buy some cleaning products that you can use to kill and clean up mold. |

You could say that - our water heater burst while we were away and flooded the basement. This also isn't the first time our basement has flooded so it is a mold issue that has grown worse over time. We have a humidifier down there 24 hours a day but to get rid of the the stuff on the walls, I think we'll need professional help. |

I'm also in the market for mold removal info. Our laundry sink has a tendancy to overflow (another issue in and of itself) and now we have mold growing on the floor where the spill occured. Will try the bleach soloution, but does anyone else have any tried and true methods or services they've used? |

FYI on cleaning up small patches of mold. Brief research on the internet has shown that the EPA doesn't recommend bleach solutions any more. You should use a mild detergent to clean it. I'm going to call a few places tomorrow: I've rec'd recommendations for Chem-Dry and I'm going to try Scrub Systems which did a good job on a move in cleaning. |

Something else to think about: Recently, a family member was diagnosed with a serious case of bronchitis (sp?) and her doctor told her that the black mold in her basement caused it. Prior to getting sick, she'd spent 1 week trying to remove it. I don't know for a fact whether the two are related, but it doesn't hurt to look into what, if any, risks there are with exposure to black mold. bklyngirl |

You can't go wrong buying a high-quality HEPA mask from Home Depot. They don't cost much (~$30) and they can prevent much more expensive problems. |

We have recommended these guidelines for years. NYC DOH Guidelines on Assessment and Remediation of Fungi in Indoor Environments: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/epi/moldrpt1.shtml |

I'm pregnant so my husband advised me to stay away from it until we can get someone to look at it. Former Cowgirl - if you speak to any of those other places you mentioned, can you let me know what they say? I'll try Servpro tomorrow. Thanks everyone. |

TJohn - Actually you can go a little better. HEPA (P-100)only filters particulate not vapors/gases like what you get from some of the sanitizers (bleach). I usually recommend a combo (Acid Gas/P-100)cartridge expecially in basements where ventilation is somewhat limited. Also bleach (sodium Hypochlorite) is a pretty darn good tooting oxidizer and at full strength on a basement dirty floor, you can get some interesting reactions. Got Pets?

Proud Daddy, I know what you mean about bleach and would use it with caution in a basement. I guess if it was to the point of needing a real gas mask, I would use a less reactive cleaning agent. |

I'm also pregnant (and asthmatic and allergic to mold) and nervous about the whole thing. I called Scrub Systems and they will come out and do a waterproofing/mold evaluation for about $125 per floor of your home. Then recommend a plan of action. I also called Chem Dry of Clifton who is coming out this week to take a look and I will let you know what they say. I also got a coupon in the mail for basements.com (I'm not sure their real name) and they offer water proofing services too. I may call them as well. I really wish my laundry wasn't in the basement...then I could ignore it just a little bit longer. |

I had a horrible mold problem in my bathroom. I bought some mold removal (ZEP) I think from Home Depot. Sprayed it on, (using a mask) it came right off. I don't know how bad your mold problem is; but this worked great and it hasn't come back. Of course since you are pregnant, have someone else do it! |
