We bought an aluminum garage door from Home Depot 4 years ago. We had Home Depot install it. A couple of weeks ago when i tried to open the door it came up a few feet and stopped. I hit the button again and it collapsed with a loud noise into a V shape (onto my car, by the way).
I called Home Depot who said to call the manufacturer of the door (Clopay). Clopay said it's not their problem but they thought it wasn't installed correctly. Finally after going into the store in person, someone from Home Depot came and looked at the door. He said it looked like someone sat on the door (and then stared me in the eyes and asked me several times to say that i had seen it happen and no one sat on the door -- as if i was on a witness stand)! After waiting and calling for a couple of weeks for an answer, he shows up at my door today and says that he thinks the door was locked (i don't even know how to lock it, we don't lock it), and that's why it collapsed. He said Clopay would give us $150 on a new door and that Clopay recommended that we get the next up in quality door.
He said i should cut the door up with a saw and put it out for recycling.
My question that i kept asking him (besides why would i ever buy another door from Home Depot), was shouldn't a garage door last more than four years?!! Are we supposed to budget $1,000 every four years for a new door?
Any thought?

That REALLY sucks.

I purchased my garage door from Home Cheapo. I wish I was a member of Costco at the time. I mentally beat myself up for paying what I did at the Cheapo when I could have gotten a better door installed for less by purchasing it from Costco.

A year ago we purchased and had our garage door installed from Lowe’s in Piscataway. We went with the Wayne Dalton insulated door and Chamberlain opener with rolling code security feature. An authorized Lowe’s contractor installed it and it works great. The sales rep advised us to avoid the least expensive metal door because they dent easily and don't last as long. For about an additional $200.00 we went with the better door which is insulated and has a solid feel to it.

Well this is all very interesting, yet another Home Cheapo testimony; I have been shopping for carriage house doors for a couple months. I'm as yet undecided and given Home Cheapo's reputation and inability to stock the item I planned on purchasing before installation I decided this proposition had too much down side. I plan on visiting Lowes to see what their stocking in the carriage house variety. I checked out Costco and I'm still in sticker shock - for carriage house doors starting at $2200 per door at the low end then tack on an additional $350 for the opener and $700 for installation per unit - with 2 doors it put us in the $6500 plus range. They also require that they do installation? Perhaps I now understand why? But at such a premium, there has to be another alternative?
