One of my wood columns in the front of my porch needs replacement. The other three are solid. I've tried a few people but I've been waiting for 2 months now. Does anyone have any recommendation on someone who can match and replace a hundred year old column?

Thanks for any help ahead of time.

Though I gather you're looking for reliable local contractor, since you've noted 100 yr old column, you may be better using/finding resources that deal with such older construction.

Specialists / preservation architects / contractors might be found through Preservation NJ: http://www.preservationnj.org/

Manufacturers / suppliers / materials that advertise might be tracked down through "Fine Homebuilding": http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/ or This Old House: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh

It's an old pine column. Nothing really fancy. I didn't think it could be so hard to match.

I'll see if I can put a picture up.

Darren, I think this might work, at least from an acquistion standpoint. Sorry, but installation contractor I can't help with.

If not Melton's, you could try Chadsworth:
http://www.columns.com/

or Colonial:
http://www.colonialcolumns.com/

Hope that helps a little. Great restoration work on the sound ones!!

Thanks so much for the insight on the places to go.

And thanks for the comments on my work. I can't say enough about how well the silent paint remover works.
