Just had our house painted and the house was tarped for all sanding and sanded with HEPA vacuums. Neighbors' house being sanded now and no tarp at all. Just curious if anyone knows if it's supposed to be?

Depends where you live. Maplewood has an ordinance requiring lead containment while painting. Millburn does not (although some painters always do it anyway). Not sure about SO.

I've seen it done both ways, and never understood why. When they painted my house they used the HEPA vacs and taped the windows, but there was not tarp.

just had my house painted by rutgers. hepa vacs, tape and tarps. maplewood ordinance requires area must be contained. also warned that we should not plant any vegetative plants within 5 ft of the house

i guess that explains those weird boils on my skin. I've been eating all my veggies from my garden which is planted directly against my house. We painted last year and paint chips were all over the place. I guess you really do get what you pay for!

In West Orange, we had one company give us three quotes: one for lead completely contained, one for lead containment "lite", and the third for "oh screw it.'

It could be a question of whether the paint will be completely removed, sanded to bare wood, or spot sanding. If spot sanding, a tarp is probably not required in Maplewood.

I would think that once you have had a complete treatment by Rutgers or some company using similar methods, the amount of ancient lead that will be released in future sandings will be negligible.

Less than negligible...I just wonder about how much of the lead paint gets spread around during the sanding, on the lawn, around the house, does it seep into the house through the air--how long does it last...does the rain wash it away...stuff like that, when having all the paint sanded off...
