I have to replace the outlet cover on my yard outlet box, and figure it might be time to join the 21st century and put a GFIC outlet in the box.

Do I need a GFIC outlet if I don't use my hedge clippers in the rain?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry for the poor english... Outdoor outlets must be housed in an "in use" box.

Isn't it common to require GFIC in all "wet" areas? Bathrooms, kitchens, out of doors? Was where I used to live.

Tom - since I just sheared my extension cord the night before on a downstroke, and my GFI tripped accordingly, I can vouch that you should do it... it's a very prudent idea! If it's not (at the moment) already a current code requirement, you can bet it will be.
Remember that anything on the load side of that receptacle will now also be Ground Fault Interruption protected, which is a good thing (though anything before it will not). The other way to address that, too, is to put a GFCI breaker in the panel, thereby protecting that entire circuit (like, maybe all the outdoor receptacles, if it's wired that way).

Cynical - For interiors, it's not just common; it's absolutely code required, nationally.

Tom,

Install the GFIC. If this were a new installation, it would be code.

Even the fact that this is a repair, INSTALL THE GFIC.

Your wife and kids will thank you.

Later,
George

I am a corner cutting do-it-yourselfer. I do cut my hedges in the rain and I don't have a GFCI outlet right now.

BUT! If I were going to replace an outdoor plug anyway, I would definitely change it to GFCI. I can't think of one reason not to.

J.B.
