Wooley is offering a pre-purchase of $2.79 per gallon; what do you folks think? Hard to predict the future, I know... |

Why yes they do - however, if I had a larger tank I could purchase oil now at a greatly reduced price.

Sorry, I just typed my response to the immediately preceding note, having lost track that you initiated this thread. Last year we did find the Woolley advance purchase plan a good deal. |

I called Mitchell Supreme on Friday and they said they had mailed out the buyers' plan. If it's not in the mail today I plan to call them back. |

Its up on their website. $2.89 for the 8 payment plan $2.79 for the full payment plan. Will have to check how this compares to last year. I find it very anoying of MS how little time they give us to choose. The deadline is August 11th and I have nothing in the mail from them. |

I received the Mitchell Supreme info in the mail today. Arsenal, why should it matter how it compares with last year? I feel like I have to go with Mitchell since they administer my oil tank insurance and I vaguely recall reading that I had to stick with them to keep the insurance. I actually like them as a company anyway. I'll probably go with the 2.89 plan at 8 monthly payments with a 30% down payment. I'll probably purchase my normal 1000 gallons which is only a difference of $100 for not paying the full amount up front. |

I heard from the Oil Purchase group (that NJ citizen's action thing), they didn't really have that great of a price. Woolley seemed to do the best (I was wrong, they have a 2.69 prepurchase this year). With my luck, Laura will tease George about a 'failure to perform', we'll stage a full invasion of the middle east, and oil prices will be back to 25 cents a gallon. Then I'LL be stuck with my 2.69 price all winter. Ah well.

I think those are great prices. Pierson Oil has a two-level cap/lock scheme involving extra payment to hedge the lock ($2.93 +$75 gets you that price or lower; $2.99 locks you there no matter what the market does). I don't have time to deal with a policy change, so we're stuck for this year, but we'll be looking for next year, trust me. The pre-purchse price is $2.83 and (for a low, low $75) you can get the price cap in case you exceed the pre-purchase. |

I have to say, Woolley has done a good job for me in this house. When I first bought the place, Mitchell was the supplier... and to be blunt, they used quite a few oh-so-obvious 'bully' tactics to get me to sign up with them. I wound up dumping them after a brief conversation with the sales manager, and I've never regretted it.

I've had nothing but great experiences with Pierson. They bailed us out after an Essex Oil fiasco a few years back. I've also heard nothing but good things about Wooley. I'm just surprised/dissappointed that the price difference between companies is so big. It's not just a few pennies. |

Wendy- Just interested in the increase from last year that's all. I think its prudent for every large bill to compare from previous years. While I have no control over oil prices its an ingrained habit of mine. Mitchell has been hit or miss for us over the past 5 years. Some of their folks are great and others are...well not so great. |

Just curious .. what is wrong with Mitchell Supreme? They have been my oil provider ever since they bought out Scheible Oil about ten years ago. I have never really had a problem with them, although the cost of my annual maintanence plan has roughly doubled over the past 18 years. Their costs are in line (or even cheaper) than Wooley, and their emergency service is usually prompt. I am certainly not married to them, and if another oil company offered me a compelling reason to switch, then I would. |

We just got off the phone with Petro. Anyone use them? Re. the 1000 gallon estimate that "everyone in our area" seems to be using, according to the Petro rep. Have you found that this is really what you end up needing over the winter? We've never had oil before and that estimate is TERRIFYING to me. Petro is offering a 12 month payment plan if we lock into their fixed price ($2.84 by the way) and 1000 gallons. I'm ready to have a heart attack. We've never been through a winter in this house so I don't know how much heat we will end up needing or using. I hate to have to commit to this 12 month payment plan without knowing anything about how this house heats in the winter. Thoughts? |

It depends a great deal on your insulation, windows, doors, size of house... and tolerance for cold! There's no one in my house during the day, so I keep the heat pretty low. Even when I'm here by myself, I just wear a sweater - no point in keeping the whole house warm just for me. What you should be doing is thinking about weatherstripping - finding drafts and eliminating them. You'd be shocked at how much heat you waste because of a 'small' draft in a door or window. To answer your question more directly, I am very parsimonious with the heat... and I use about 400 gallons a year. |

Former Cowgirl- Is it possible to find out who the previous owner used? You could call the Company and ask how much the previous owner bought the past couple years. There might be a sticker on the boiler or around the boiler area in your basement. Failing that you could call Wooley, Mitchell Supreme and others in the area give them your address and ask if they supplied your house in the past. |
