Looks like a nice big hive in there somewhere, plus a wasps nest in a hole in my lawn. Anyone know a good exterminator? Tried a search but it's not working.

You could also try Joe Batic - I don't have his number handy, but he's in Union or Springfield. He's gotten rid of wasps in our chimney, yellow jackets in our garden and bees by the porch.

Carpenter bees aren't around right now, and when they are they don't have nests that a lot of bees will go into. The mother bee will drill a perfectly round little 1/4" circle straight about 2 inches, then she will drill a 90 degree turn and make a long corridor along which she will lay her eggs. Then she will hover like a helicopter just outside the hole, guarding the hole opening. She will fight off other bees and predators, but basically leaves people alone.

If there are a lot of bees going into a void in your ceiling, you have a different bee issue.

Regarding the mud bees, watch out - a friend had an outdoor bday party for her 5 year old last weekend and it was ruined b/c they were playing organized sports on the lawn and apparently a nest of bees was bothered (or as my son said, "they were motivated to defend their nest"). At least 7 kids were covered in bees and stung multiple times - in their hair, their sandals, their clothing. Some kids had to strip their clothing off b/c the bees were covering the clothing. It was very traumatic, for the unstung kids, the parents and especially the kids that were stung!

I highly recommend getting an exterminator since you have kids - I recommend a very chatty, but very nice and effective A-Eastern Pest Control guy at (973) 736-5041.

Good luck!

Pdg is correct.Too late in the season for carp. bee's and they are highly territorial.I try to fill their holes with a two part epoxy from Minwax which seems to discourage them to a degree.I also use a good old fashion fly swatter to eliminate the more tenacious ones.

Carpenter bees are still around I dealt with one yesterday; they are not as prominent as they were a couple months ago but they are still causing havoc in their favorite spots near the carriage house roof line.
