We have a couple of fairly big trees in our backyard that need to come down. Can anyone offer any recommendations for a service that can take them down? And, before I'm accused of moving up from Florida just to tear down poor, defenseless trees, let me note that these two trees have grown into the roof of my garage and are in the process of knocking it over. Other than these two trees, I love every tree on the planet and wish there were more of them.

For tree removal, you should absolutely get quotes - there can be a wide range of prices. Last year, I got my best deal from Frank's Tree Service.

After nearly a month of waiting, Tree Tech just did mine. Very happy with the job they did - just not the wait. But the price was right.

Just be warned - whoever you call is bound to be backed up at this time of year - especially with all the fears over what happened in Montclair a few weeks back.

Ed Such @ Evergreen Landscaping and Tree Service is really great. We've used him twice. He's often overlooked on this board but I recommend him highly.

Price for tree removal is a difficult thing to guess on...

It all depends on the location of the tree, how many people it might take to remove it, whether you'll need a crane/cherry picker or just a couple of guys with chain saws, etc.

Tree-tech took out two big trees for me for just under 2 grand, but I got estimates ranging from that amount up to nearly 3 grand. It really all depends. The best thing to do is get as many estimates as you can stand, and see what they say.

Did they leave the stump or grind it down?
