We have a 2-year old granite countertop that has a white film around the faucet. Is this scale from our mineral-rich water and what can we do to get rid of it?

you could try CLR ( i think that's what it's called), or try some white vinegar - that'll loosen up mineral deposits.

But i'm not sure if it's going to make it worse. Can't tell if this white stuff has seeped into the granite or not.

I have the same problem. Too late....what they really want you to do is wipe/clean each time there is water there. Sure! As I have, you too will have to learn to live with it.

CLR worked like a charm.

Once the deposits are cleared off, you should seal the countertop. Ours are Corian, but my daughter's counters are granite, and she was told by the people who installed hers to seal it twice a year.

What's the best way to seal granite? I used a sealer by TILELab that I bought at Home Depot and applied it three times, and still water seems to soak into our granite vanitiy top! The sealer said when water spots stop showing, the granite is "sealed". Am I doing something wrong or using a bad product?

Thanks!

Silicon Impregnater is what my daughter uses on hers. Does a beautiful job. Should be available at Home Depot.

Also, you should use some stuff called Granite Magic twice a week with a soft cloth. Creates a nice water barrier and shinee. Works wonders.

You should call the folks who did the countertop and ask them what to use to clean the deposits & to seal...if not, there's an online place that answers questions (usually in a smartazz way): http://www.findstone.com/aw.htm

I discovered Kaboom! for waterspots and it works great. Bought 2 bottles at Costco recently for less than $7.

Could it be that excess water is getting beneath the sealant at those areas and the white film is actually the sealant separating from the granite? After polishing and re-sealing the area, you may want to put a clear silicone caulk bead around the base of the faucet to protect that area from seeping water.

Has anyone here actually done a sealing job? Do you spray something on and let it dry?
