We are doing a small landscaping project and need to hire a day laborer to come help us for a week. Where could we find someone like that? Thanks! |

I just went over to Rossi paints on Main St in Orange - corner of Scotland - there were tons of people over there, offering to do what I was setting out to do... I think there's also often people over by Scotland and Central Avenue, too |

eire, how do you go about engaging one or two of these daylaborers? what's the going rate for yardwork, a little weeding, a little planting, a little moving some stuff around, etc. for a day...$100? $150? |

Any way, all joking aside, why would anyone want to ride over to some corner where a group of strangers who only speak a foreign language are hanging out and looking for a few hours of work? You have no idea who these people are. They could be hard working, honest, law abiding individuals or they could be thieves, rapists or worse. You have no way of knowing so why would you take a chance of introducing someone like the latter to your home and family? Do yourself a favor and hire a legitimate contractor. |

yeah, I would imagine they're not. I wasn't comfortable with it, but I know tons of people do it - I'm sure you'd have to describe the project and talk $ before you got started... I had a few guys approach me while I was picking up paint for a very small job... |

daylaborer, i'm not saying i would. i have thought about it though, but your concerns are mine as well. that's why i asked eire the question. it's not easy to get a legimate contractor to send a couple guys over for a day to do weeding, moving and mulching unless you are putting new stuff in and buying the mulch from them. was your offer serious? are you a boy? i'm picturing you as a middle aged adult. |

"was your offer serious? are you a boy? i'm picturing you as a middle aged adult." If I had more time, yes, it would be a serious offer and yes, I'm a fifty something year young boy. |

The people on Scotland Road & Central Avenue across from the Getty Station are day laborers. They are there 7 days a week from 8AM until they are picked up by contractors or individuals looking for day laborers. I know people who use them on a regular basis, most are Hispanic from Central America and speak enough English to get by. If it is yard work you need I don't think you have anything to worry about, I'm not sure if I'd let them into my house for a job but to work in the yard I don't see a problem. I know someone who tells them that the day rate is $8 / hour if they work at a relaxed pace and $10/hour if they really work. He's been using them for a couple years and hasn't had a complaint. Most are relatively young and since they are being used by contractors each has developed various skills so it's good if you know a little Spanish so you can weed through the group and get people that have experience or are familiar with the mechanics of your project. I've heard there are other areas where they congregate Summit train station, places in Freehold & Dover. If you do hire them for a day it is typical that you also provide lunch and transportation back to the site you’re found them. |

For those of you that don't want to go the day laborer-stranger route, my 17 year-old son, a college bound, high school senior, is anxious to work and earn money for a car. He's worked for others from MOL doing light construction, landscaping, computer work and painting. He is very bright and hard working and a very interesting kid to be around. And, now, HE HAS A DRIVERS LICENSE, TOO!

I did this last year for landscaping work, and offered $10/hr + lunch and a ride back to the site. They decided among themselves whose "turn" it was to get a job. They guy worked his butt off and did a great job. I wound up paying a bit extra 'cause I felt badly for him. Anyway, I speak Spanish pretty well, and otherwise may have had a problem. But the group will self-select for who they think can manage the job, and if you say they must have some English, you're likely to get what you want. |
