We are converting our heating system from oil to gas. We are also having duct work changed in the living room and dining room from the walls to the floor.

Two questions...do I have any reason to worry that the joists will be compromised when they start drilling holes from the basement to the 1st floor (remember...I believe my house is sinking!)

2nd question...we are not updating the electricity but do I need to worry that the furnace will now be ignited electrically.

Please be patient with me.

Well... I doubt they'd be drilling through floor joists to put duct work in; the floor will certainly need to have some new holes put in it, but that is not a structural concern. So I would have to say "no, you don't have to worry" regarding the joists, but by all means discuss this concern with your contractor!

I do not believe that igniting a furnace causes a significant electrical load; I did a fast search and can't seem to find that spec, but I kind of doubt that you have an issue here. Remember that your oil furnace needs an electrical source of ignition also; again, talk to the contractor, but I think you'll be OK with this job.

Now, Mommasan, you know I hardly know anything about anything, but I do know that if any big, compromising holes were drilled through your joists, it should be picked up by a good inspector - Jim Kriney (the number I gave you the other day) noticed that the people who drilled new heat or water or some kind of pipes (told you I only know a little) drilled a hole too big, which did compromise one of the joists, and thus the lalley column (sp?)

Remember when you never posted, only read??

Oh, Jim is getting consulted...you know, it was late and my mind started wandering. Too much work, too little sleep and too much to do around here! I'm going to the pool!
