Embarking on a grand reno. Arhictect sucks. I don't want to spend time and money taking on another to essentially put to paper what I'm gonna do. GC and I came up with plans that I'm submitting on my own behalf. A little concerned that plans may not be as sound as they should be for the amount of dollars im sinking into said project. Would like to run some things by Engineer to get their proverbial stamp of approval. |

very sad & sorry to hear that you've had a jaded experience w/ a particular design professional. given the project (grand renovation), I'd really REALLY suggest you rethink your stance. but..... both architects & struct. eng. can perform/review analysis of the sketches. depending on what you're asking them to 'approve', their professional responsibility may require declining unless you retain them fully (dwg prep & design time). ask your GC to recommend someone (or is he jaded too?) |

Ibeme, I am an architect. And I too, am sorry you have had a bad experience. In some circumstances an architect or an engineer will review plans/documents and stamp them. But this is a rare occurance. I will only do this sort of work in a 'repair' situation. I will not do it for new work. Be wary of someone who will. I have license and I respect it. The State of New Jersey certainly expects me to do so. I just don't want to see you have another bad experience. In my opinion someone who will just 'stamp' your documents without designing the work (and by design I mean structural calculations, not paint colors) is not being professionally responsible. Simply a word of caution... |

I guess I'm just frustrated. I'm in sales. If I don't return calls, the business will go elsewhere. I was on the hook with this woman because I had already invested money with her and to start over again simply because she didn't return my call didn't make economic sense at the time. It now seems like I should consult another architect, but don't want to start from scratch. I mean, everyone's entitled to make their money, but business fundamentals indicate that phone calls need to be returned on the same business day they're left, maybe the next day, but beyond that, there is no excuse!! I literally called this person six times before she happened to magically be in the office when I called. She didn't apologize and when I reminded her of all the times I called, she said, "I don't know what to say. I'm sorry." I wanted to tell her to take a leap! |

You're right, I agree. Calls need to be returned. It is a fundamental of business. We are all busy, if one is too busy that needs to be stated. Truly - I just want you to be wary. But given your circumstance, you already know that :-)
