Our kitchen floor is some kind of cheap veneered plywood with a pinkish whitewash on it. It desparately needs help. I think it would look great painted (I'm thinking a muted checkerboard pattern) but I won't DIY. Do regular interior painters do this type of work? Or do I need a decorative/mural type painter? I'm guessing wood refinishers pretty much just sand and stain, right?

Also wondering if it would be cheaper to just replace it, maybe with a stone like tile or different wood.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

I've painted several wood floors but I'm not sure you will find this finish durable enough for a kitchen -- it will definitely wear in the traffic patterns, no matter what kind of protective finish you apply. I don't know what a decorative painter would charge you (and I do think you need one, not a house-painter), but I bet it would not be cheap. I would be headed for the sheet vinyl aisle myself! ...or something of that nature...

Thanks mim, that was hubby's opinion.

We are fixing up with the thought that we will probably move within 2 years, so the finish would only have to last that long. The realtor says do not replace wood with vinyl/lino/cork (cork would be my choice). That even the crappy, distressed plywood is more "saleable".

I'm thinking I need to have a refinisher over to see if they can do anything with it first, then maybe look into replacement options.

I appreciate the feedback!

I have Congoleum Laguna Maple (vinyl sheet) and I just had a realtor over and she said, "This wood floor is beautiful."

Unless you have your shoes and socks off, you really can't tell. Jasco Tile carries it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the wood floors I have, but my kitchen floors were absolute garbage wood. This looks ever so much better and is easier to keep clean.

I see H.D is having a sale on wood floors. $2.99/S.F. Go check it out. There is also a laminate type we have installed for some people, it is also $2.99 S.F. and could even be a DIY. It already has the underlayment attached and just snaps together. I believe it is called Swiftlock and we got it at Lowes. It comes in a wide plank in several colors and looks great.

Thanks Melicious. I was all set to do a cork floor but she insisted we keep our garbage wood or replace it with wood or tile.

Thanks Sherri! Will check out HD.
