We have a fig tree that we planted a few years ago, we protect it during the winter, and this summer it has really thrived. Problem is, it looks more like a 6 ft. tall bush, instead of a tree. The branches actually start at the ground, although these are relatively small. How do we get it to become a tree instead of a bush? Will pruning the bottom branches change the growth pattern or will it just eventually grow from bush to tree? If pruning is the answer, is it okay to do this now or is there a particular season to do so. It hasn't actually borne fruit yet, but we are hoping it will happen sometime before we need walkers to get out to the backyard.

Since the tree has been in its spot a few years, there should be no problem with removing the "suckers" -- the branches closer to the ground. If you want the tree to have a more conventional tree shape, that's the way to do it, just don't remove too much at a time, and it's probably best to only prune the tree at the beginning and end of the growing season. I'd bet that a search of the terms "fig" and "pruning" would give you all the details you need.

Could I ask a question?
How do you protect your fig in the winter? I brought my one year old plant indoors last winter and it started leafing in January - a little too early.
Thank you.
