Back in 1999 being inexperienced we renovated a small bedroom in our house a few years back. We tore out the plaster and replaced it with sheetrock and proceeded to paint the walls using a semi-gloss paint. It worked out fine but as usual showed any imperfections in the wall (there weren't many since they were new but they were noticeable). Fast foward six years and we're preparing for our new arrival and we'd like to paint the room again. My wife purchased a satin finish for the wall despite my telling her to pick up some eggshell. My questions are: 1) Should I take the paint back to Riccardi and ask if they'll exchange it for eggshell? 2) Regardless of what we wind up painting it will we have to sand the old semigloss? 3) Will priming the walls work just as well as sanding or do we need to do both? Or is this just better left for a professional? |

1/ If it is a custom mixed color paint stores usually wouldn't exchange it. 2/ I would only sand bad places 3/ I would prime with Zinseer 123 primer. Even the pros use this product and most of them swear by Benjamin Moore. |

Thanks Bobk. I have a couple of gallons of that primer at home. I was wondering if sanding was required to remove some of the sheen from the semi-gloss so the new paint would adhere better. And the paint is a custom color so I doubt Riccardi would take it back. |

Riccardi has a big sign that says custom colors are not returnable. |

Sportsnut, It can't hurt to ask Riccardi. I had a similar issue earlier this year with paint purchased at Home Depot. They exchanged the paint. As for the primer, you already have it on hand, so prime away. I prime everything before a finish coat, and a satin or eggshell finsh over primer presents no problems. TomR |
