Please someone save me from having to do all the research on this. I am completely burned out from all the other stuff going on in my house. I just had Nick Kosh give me an estimate for gutters. Is there anything special gutter-wise (and I don't mean getting those leaf guard things or whatnot, I just mean regular gutters) I should know about/ask about before I just take what he gives me?

The type of hanger that holds it to your home is equally if not more important than the thickness of the aluminum he'd be using.

Most gutter guys purchase their hidden hangers from Eagle gutter supply in East Rutherford. They make a lousy hidden hanger. One of the worst I've seen. You can bend it with your hand.

Make sure he's not going to install the gutter with a "spike & ferrule" which is using really big nails to hold it to your home. This way is also old and the gutter will fall off prematurely to its life expectancy.

The best hangers I've seen are from a company called Raytec out of PA. Their hangers hold the most in outward pressure, which is what you want.

All gutter coil comes with a 20 year paint warranty so don't be suckered into someone telling you their Kynar finish is the reason you should purchase from them.

Also make sure you're really getting ".032.

I can provide you with a sample if need be.

1/2 round gutters carry less water than the 5" OG type, which is probably what he means by "standard", but some houses or I should say the 1/2 round gutter is better suited to the architectural style of the house as well as also being more functional. 1/2 round gutters usually are installed further away from the fascia and consequently more of a roof overhang is needed at the eave for proper drainage into the gutter. If you replace the 1/2 round with an OG, make sure that you don't have too much overhang since this type gutter mounts directly (usually) to the fascia. This can be overcome by padding out the fascia. If you don't have the right over hang, you'll be prone to spill over and it makes it tough to clean out.

Personally, I'd be a bit leery of recommending changing out the 1/2 round to OG without seeing the installation as it is now. If you could post a picture of the house, I might be able to advise you better.

Huge echo on daylaborers cautioning on swapping half-round profile gutters for 5" OG or K type gutters!!!

FYI, "OG" means Original/Old Gothic, and are very frequently called "K"-type as well. They were developed to mimic wood mouldings on structures, prior to the use of gutters becoming a conventional building practice. See here:

These sites have a bit gutter info & examples:

Good luck!!
