Just had our front steps redone by mason Mike Bellucci (super job), and now Mrs. Soda wants new pillars to support the overhang. I was going to give a call to RGH (Bob Hume), but I wonder if anybody can suggest another contractor who'll competently handle this small job for less than Hume's champagne prices...

I assume the present overhang is temporally supported? Have you dedcided on what style? Just some words of advice.

Mr. McKell: Temporarily silenced by the recent suspension of his posting priviledges (no doubt a long-overdue reaction by the management of this benighted little virtual community), my non-handy ex-employee Soda has asked me to respond to your queries, and any subsequent posters on this thread.

The overhang of your query is indeed supported, pending installation of an indeterminate number of tapered Tuscan columns such as this:
(My own personal preference is for the Ionian style, but no matter...)

Two of these pillars graced the front of Soda's abode until they were removed by the mason, and there is evidently some aesthetic question as to whether or not -- as well as by how many -- they ought be replaced. I am told that Soda will order such new supports as his wife decides are required from Congdon Lumber in nearby West Orange.

So, back to his original inquiry: Are any mortals out there familiar with deft tradesmen ready to perform the needed carpentry at reasonable cost?

I suggest New Colors and/ or Ticos Carpentry.
New Colors phone number: (973) 763-0034. Ask for Wilbur. You can speak with Nicki in the office and leave a message for Wilbur with her.
They do excellent work.

We just did the same thing for our house after new steps were installed. We ordered ours from Congdon Lumber - they mailed us a catalog of columns - and hired Ricky of Ricky's Carpentry to do the job. Tico's estimate was higher, so we went with Ricky. 973-280-9424
