Thanks to our fabulous East Orange water, we have finally decided to look into getting a water softener. The water was fine when we moved in two years ago but immediately got much harder following the switch to East Orange water. There's one problem with installing a softener: the main water valve in our house (where the water softener would need to be physically located near) is nowhere near a drain, which is kind of important since the softener will make regular discharges every month. So if we want a softener, it appears we have two options:

1. Run the pipe from the water softener through the external frame of the house to outside (i.e., discharge into the grass outside our house). Under this option, we would go with a potassium chloride based system, rather than sodium chloride, on the basis that potassium is plant- and grass-friendly, whereas sodium chloride is not. However, I am not sure whether this would violate a town ordinance of some kind, if we would need a permit, etc. Aesthetically, the discharge would not be observable from the street due to a row of strategically placed hedges.

2. Run piping INSIDE the house, from the softener to our laundry room sink/drain. Because of the physical layout of the house, this would likely mean exposed pipe in the house. From an aesthetic standpoint, not so great, certainly something that future buyers of the home might find off-putting if sometime down the road we decide to sell.

Obviously, I prefer option #1, but don't want to invest in installation only to later discover that it's illegal and needs to be removed. Anyone who is well-versed in town ordinances/legalities, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Why not make the tie in (domestic water) at the main, and then run the waters to the location of choice for the drain (water softeners location). Its much easier to run water piping because you are not constrained by the pitch required. Running domestic water today is so much easier with the advent of new technology such as pex. It now can practically be run like wiring through your home.

Just remember, a licensed plumber is required for the tie in's and NOT the softener people, unless by chance they are licensed.
