so now your summer is virtually over - what worked and what didn't? what would you do differently at the beginning of summer if you could do it all over again?

I'm talking inside the house. It's going to be a long dry summer, and the ants will be seeking water rather than food.

Any advice on how to keep persistent flies from the roof areas of patios etc would also be appreciated. Preferably non-chemical, but whatever works will be be fine.

We called Jerry Buckingham to solve our ant problem. I recommend him. He uses chemicals, but they don't stink as does something like Raid.

I wish Jerry could come over - guess he won't make it to rural Australia!! However will call in a pest control guy if I have to...that will certainly help with other critters as well. Most of our pest control people won't guarantee for 'ordinary' ants inside the house, however. Any other suggestions?

Do they sell roach and ant chalk where you live. I think it contains pyrethrin and you can put a line of chalk on the floor along the walls and door thresholds.

The best way to cut off a steady stream of ants is to find where they are entering and seal it off. Do this with baby powder. Think about all those bad horror movies with voodoo where they pour brick dust across an entrance to keep out enemies. Baby powder works the same way by blocking the ants scent trail. Ants already in your house walk around lost until they die, unable to find their way back to the colony. Ants outside your house won’t ever come in because they hit a dead end at the baby powder. Using this method of prevention often takes detective work to see where ants came from - if you put baby powder at the wrong opening, they’ll just keep coming.

So in short, get do on those knees and baby powder all along the floor!!!!!

I also heard that ants "smell/taste" with their feet and that lemon or lemony scents offend their senses, so squirt some lemon juice around too or have a small bowl on the counter with a cut up lemon.

Check this site out - you can learn a lot about all sorts of pests. Not sure if you can order their products, but maybe someplace in Australia sells the same things.
