Does anyone know where I can purchase a nonkill groundhog trap. I have a huge one living along the foundation of my home. Being an animal lover I would rather trap the little thing than smoke it out. If anyone has a trap I would be happy to rent it from you. Thanks Jesse www.jessekayehomes.com |

Try Schneider Hardware in Weat Orange, 973/325-2222. You may want to bear in mind that groundhogs start to get ready for the big winter sleep this month, so trap while the trapping is good! |

You may be able to borrow a "have a heart" trap from the health department of your town. They usually require a small deposit, refunded when you return the trap. |

I have been trying to trap a groundhog for a while. He's been Goldilocks to my tomatoes this summer. I have caught two racoons in the borrowed Have a Heart Trap from the town. The animal control officer said "you'll never catch a woodchuck" as he took the second racoon to be released in the Great Swamp. He recommended swishing a very tiny amount of gasoline in a coffee can, then placing the can in the entrance of the burrow. The can should have no gasoline in it, just the residual scent. The aroma will cause the beast to vacate and move on to your neighbor's property. I will try it this week.

Better yet, pour the gas down the burrow, yell "fire in the hole" and light a match. Since we now live hard by the Res we expected a ton of deer. Oddly, we haven't seen very many, only one doe who occasionally shows up. Woodchucks are another issue and they are very destructive. My favorite are the chipmunks, who are really crazy. I was putting an additional vent in a door to a crawl space and the noise of the jig saw and hammering really set them off. About four of them came out of their burrow next to the foundation and ran around in circles chattering constantly. ONe even ran across my foot. I can't bring myself to seal their burrows however, because they are so damn cute. |
