Looking for an architect for a 3 story addition to our house in Maplewood. In particular, we'd like someone who can help us create a historically appropriate and aesthetically pleasing addition, rather than sticking a box on the back of our house.

Recommendations of who to use/not use are appreciated.
Thanks!!

We put on a two story addition in the Montrose section, and used Allenberg, Hockstein & Miller (AHM) of Millburn. Doug Miller did a fantastic job on our addition and Xcel Renovation did (still doing) the work. We were extremely happy with Doug's work. He works on a cap and not on a percentage of the overall job, which was helpful to us.

We used Maplewood's Clawson Architects for a gut kitchen renovation following some friends larger job with them. They have a full appreciation for preserving a homes historical style and they come up with very creative solutions. We couldn't be happier with the results.

Steve Majewski of Majewski Jones in South Orange does some really nice work in matching styles.

Tim Klesse - local practice, solid design, thorough contract managment.... well-versed in maintaining (or 'matching existing') aesthetics.

I second davel's recommendation for Clawson. In the middle of an addition with them now. Like you, I wanted to be absolutely sure I wouldn't end up with some hideous "box" on the back of my house. The Clawson's are very concerned with the quality of their work, and very attuned to different historical architectural styles. With their help, our house is going to be just a little bit more "Mission", but a whole lot bigger.

Originally, I had just though we would add on to our existing kitchen, but they came up with an idea that never would have occurred to me. We are adding a whole new space for a kitchen and reconfiguring the entire first floor and will, ultimately, have a very "modern" living space--in terms of the kind of floor plan you would find in new construction--giant kitchen open on to family room which is one of the biggest rooms on the first floor, a smaller formal "parlor" and an open flow with lots of room to entertain.

If you want to see a fabulous example of their work, drive up Mountain Avenue between Ridgewood and Wyoming. Closer to Wyoming on the north(?) side of the street is a brand new house they designed, which replaced a hideous 60's style brick raised ranch. The new house is a stunning shingle style Arts and Crafts home they designed from the ground up.

FYI, if you follow the link to the website davel provided and click on "On The Boards" in the upper right corner, the house I mentioned is the "Reinhardt" house.

Hmmmmm. My house is "On The Boards" but I don't see it on the website. Going to have to talk to them about that!

I can highly recommend Paul Golden who is an experienced architect and a South Orange resident. He appreciates the original flavor of each building and can be loyal to it. 973-762-7580
