(I posted this thread in the Gardening Section a few days ago, but got no response, so I'm trying it again here.)

There are mushrooms growing on my mulch! I removed a bunch about 1 month ago, but they're back. What can I do to permanently remove the fungus growing on my mulch?

This is the first time this has happened, why? I use cedar mulch, could it be that type of mulch?

Any help is appreciated.

It's very wet. You got some spores in there somehow and they are in a very happy environment. I just ignore mine and wait for things to dry out

That's just nature's way of showing you whose got the upper hand.

Maybe rubber mulch.... you can't fight nature at her own game but could possibly win with synthetics.

Fungus is all around us outside. You cannot get rid of it.

The mushroom is just the reproductive phase of the fungus that already exists below the mulch. Fungus aids plant growth by facilitating the absorption of certain nutrients by the roots. Without it, the plants would die.

Yes, but how can I prevent the fungus from showing? I've never had mushrooms growing on my mulch before and it's pretty ugly and disgusting to look at.

I don't want to kill all the fungus, necessarily, just prevent the mushrooms and powdering substance from growing.

Orange/yellow ones in the front lawn, cool ghostly looking white and gray ones under the trees in back. Must be fall!

Yes! That's exactly what I have, mjc. Why hasn't this happened before, though?

Just don't eat them -- unless you've got 12 hours to spare and a Pink Floyd show to go to.

But back in college, we couldn't get those in the yard. We had to pay for 'em.

Just remove them. They may come back if things stay wet, but it should be controllable (just like pulling a few stray weeds).

Just use a rake and dislodge them....they'll shrivel up in a day.

Thanks, everyone. I'll just keep removing them.
