I want to remove the chair rail in one of our bedrooms, and it's nailed into drywall -- on all 4 walls. We've already painted the walls (had planned to keep the chair rail at the time), so I'd like to do minimal damage to the wall. I do expect to patch & repaint portions once I remove the chair rail. - how can I remove it easily? - what holes etc. am I likely to find behind? I've posted a couple of photos in case it helps.

Expect to patch and paint. Get yourself a nice "cat's paw" molding removal tool. Should be around $17.00 When your prying it off be sure to put something soft on the back side for leverage and protection against maring the paint. Good luck. Michael K. Mc Kell

Score the paint line between the rail and the wall, especially since it looks like there is a bead of caulk. Use a fairly wide putty or taping knive (3 or 4 inches) between the wall and any prying instrument you use to minimize damage to the wall. Sand, spackle and repaint.
