To solve my problem of a cold basement in the winter, as well as to alleviate sky-high heating bills, I am thinking of installing a wood-burning stove in the basement of my S.O. home. Any thoughts as to whether they are legal, safe, cost-effective? Any good retailers or installers? |

The Fireplace Place in Summit I got a Fireplace insert and kept my house a very toasty warm temperature most of the winter without having to pay PSE&G any more than I did last year. The wood I burned (about 3 cords) cost about what the average month of gas cost and so I left my boiler at 64 and ran wood when I was home for warmth. The gas bills were not as bad as many people ... they were about the same for me as last year, but this year (thanx to the wood) I was warm (70-72). LOPI is the brand I got-- www.lopistoves.com and they make VERY NICE freestanding units. I would think it is completely legal, but you're going to have to have 'some form' of chimney work done to vent it (which is not a problem if your chimney is in good shape). If you want to see what I put in (it was 3500 installed) private me and I'll give you the address here. Richard (ROC) --Never be afraid to try something new.
