Any recommendations for someone to put in a new sidewalk? Insurance demands that it be done soon, although I don't think you can pour concrete until the ground thaws (May, maybe?).

It's probably a small job (lot is only 50' wide), since only a few of the squares will need to be done.

Thanks!

I'd suggest (for the sake of being once and done) that you have the whole thing done in a shot. I think that 1) it will be aesthetically more pleasing that it all matches and 2) whatever caused the cracking/heaving/problem in the first place may occur on the bit(s) you leave undone.

I can't think that it would be dramatically more expensive to do it all, rather than part

Some of the sidewalk had already been done (new poured concrete - looks fine), and some is still slate, of which a few pieces are broken. I had just wanted to remove all the slate and fill in with concrete, so it looks like the rest of the sidewalk. When our front yard's oil tank was taken out, the trucks crushed the slate, but the concrete parts are fine (no heaving - no trees).

Knowing this, do you still think we should do the whole thing? Is it less expensive to do the whole thing in one shot, as opposed to just the parts that need it? I don't know what it costs to frame out and pour a slab, so any information is appreciated!

A couple of years back we got a notice from the town (I believe) right before Christmas ordering us to fix our sidewalk or risk a fine. Some of our neighbors received the same notices. After we all got over our outrage at the timing of the notices (dead of winter holidays etc.) we all got together and hired the same contractor to do all of our sidewalks at once. One truck, three neighbors. Even though we only had one or two slabs that needed fixing we opted to do them all for consistency's sake. I had 15 slabs poured and it cost me about 1,400. You might want to ask your neighbors if anyone else is interested. It might be cheaper.

Also call the town and see if they have worked scheduled, if you in South Orange, they will tell you the name of the company and you can see if they will do yours at the same time.

You can pour concrete all winter long with the right mix. The gournd is the problem if you can't excavate. We've got pours scheduled over the next (2) weeks.
If you've got "flags" cracked and/or heaving they're pretty easy.
FYI winter mix concrete is probably @ $80.00 a yard.
Good luck.

Part of our sidewalk (one-half of the side of a corner lot) is older and it is barely noticeable. Maybe it would be noticeable in front of a house, though.

Sounds like in your situation you can just do the parts where the flags had been. :-)

But I like the idea of getting together with your neighbors and trying to save some money that way.
