A while back there was a thread about leaking stop valves on radiators. I am evaluating getting them fixed, and learned that they may be covered under a home warranty. For those plumbing experts, is a stop valve a "gate valve" or some other type of valve? THANKS! |

It's actually a type of Globe Valve, meaning it has a washer and seat inside, like a hose spigot. |

Is it leaking from the valve stem onto the floor or past the washer inside into the radiator when it is off? |

It's leaking from the valve stem. My thinking is that the packing (if there is any) is shot, based on others' posts on this site. But I don't know. |

Did you try tightening the nut on the stem? If that doesn't work you can get graphite packing to repack the valve. If the leak is around the stem, this should solve the problem. I think replacing the entire valve can be a fairly expensive job. |
