We have a small, glassed-in entryway to our house that has its own little roof. Currently there are no gutters on it, and the rain and snow tend to sit on the wooden column supports holding the roof up, eventually causing moss and rot. We've had repairs done and just had the house repainted, so I'd like to prevent the problem from recurring by putting gutters on this rooflet. My carpenter recommended using copper gutters for aesthetic reasons and I'm inclined to agree, though our main gutters are white aluminum, with the leaders painted to match the house. He gave me two gutter companies to call - Toros Seamless Gutters in Paterson and Keltom Gutter in Berkeley Heights. I've already gotten a quote from Toros for $672 for 5" copper gutters and 2x3 copper leaders installed. Keltom can't get here to do the estimate until early January. Has anyone used either of these companies? Does the first estimate sound reasonable? Any opinions about whether this type of roof should have gutters on it altogether? Any input is appreciated.

I've heard good things about Toros Seamless Gutters. The price sounds about right, but another estimate couldn't hurt. |

Thanks, Michael. What do you think about the aesthetics of putting gutters on this type of roof? I don't want it to look like a giant rain hat, if you know what I mean. |

I just spoke to the guy from Toros who gave me the estimate. His opinion is that putting copper gutters on the rooflet while the main roof has white aluminum gutters would look strange. However, without exact measurements, he said that replacing the gutters on the main roof with copper (so that it would all match) would run in the ball park of $7000-$9000! Yikes! There's no way we're spending that kind of money, especially since the gutters on the roof were replaced with one of those guard-type gutters just 6 years ago, which then cost us around $1800. Any other opinions about what would look best, assuming that we cannot afford to change the main roof gutters for the foreseeable future? |
