I just got a quote for some electrical work in my house that I thought was quite steep. I asked the man to do two GFI outlets..one in the kitchen and one in the bath..install a porch light at my back door and put lights above my medicine cabinet..he gave me a quote for $800.00..is this too high or I am just unrealistic? |

What will the new lights involve? Depends on if there are existing connections, etc. If it involves pulling wire or adding a circuit to the panel, that may be on target. Also, how old is the electrical work in your house? Are there things that need to be brought to code in order to do what you want? More information would be helpful to answer this question. |

While I agree with Mike and Greenetree (details matter - especially with old wiring), I more or less rewired my whole house over the course of the last 3 years and $800 was the rate my electrician charged for a full day - $100/hour for he and his helper, plus any materials.

Thanks for all your feedback. For both of the GFI's there was not existing wiring so he would have to do the wiring also. The outside light also had to be wired. There were no new breakers. My house was built in 1927 but it has an upgraded electrical panel. The GFi in the kitchen would be tricky because he would have to move the dishwasher and run the wiring in back of it. The bathroom GFI would have to be run through the closet wall.

The $800 sounds in the ballpark. We had one outlet added (he pulled wire to a weird place) and a few minor things done in about half a day. It was around $400. Our guy prices by the job and not the hour. He's not the cheapest, but he's very good and we have been very pleased with him over the years. Ask your electrician how long he/she thinks the job will take. If he/she is one of the electricians highly recommended on this board (there are several) you probably aren't getting ripped off with that quote. |

The work described takes about 1 day. With materials this is a fair price. If in doubt, get one or more new price quotes/estimates. |
