I've got iron hot water heating piping (probably as old as the house - 80 years) with no wrapping (post asbestos-abatement). The Home Depot sells pre-cut tubes of insulation - however, the spec is for copper pipes. Does it make a difference if I put in on my iron pipes? ANy way it can damage them? Thanks!

Buy the insulation from NJ Plumbing Supply or Palmer Plumbing supply. The prices are similar and you can support local businesses. Also, if you ever need some plumbing advice, the supply houses have some very knowledgeable people.

Anyway, if the insulation sections are sized for copper, they might not fit over iron. Both iron and copper are sized by internal diameter, but iron is thicker. I am pretty sure that you can get insulation sections for iron pipe at the supply houses I mentioned.

There is no risk of damage, but the insulating effect might be reduced if the insulation is not of the right size.

Tjohn, I can confirm that local supply houses do carry insulation for iron pipe.
I'll add that fiberglass insulation works a lot better for higher temperature applications, like steam piping, than the black foam stuff. Although the foam is fine for domestic hot water piping and is cheaper to buy.

I did the same - bought it at palmer. Home depot was always out of it, and there was never anyone to ask any questions. wrap a tape around the pipe and go into the store with a measurement, or the inner-outer thing might trip you up. You'll be surprised at how much better you're system will run with insulation. Our basement used to be the warmest room in the house.

We had the same situation and got the insulation at Maplewood Plumbing on Springfield Avenue (past Burnett towards Irvington- can't remember cross street). I was just there today for a part I needed for our tub- they are knowledgeable and helpful.

Just make sure you use gloves when insulating as the fiberglass can get in your skin.
