Every night, at about 4 a.m., when our thermostat-controlled, one year old boiler begins to re-boot to bring up the temperature, our radiators put forth sounds as if a team of elves were hitting iron pipes with small hammers. My husband claims nothing is amiss, that this is a normal function of the boiler springing into action. My uninformed gut tells me that we should call the boiler company, as the noise awakens me, and often, my toddlers, too. (Husband blissfully sleeps through the ruckus.) Diagnosis and advice, please!

We actually just had our plumber here checking out our radiators. We have a new furnace also and got extreme banging down by the furnace. He said it looks like we're keeping our water level too high -- it should only be about 1/2 way up the glass and we were worried about it being too low, so we had it up really high. He said that given that nothing else looks like it's a problem, we're probably getting that banging because there's too much water (or something like that...I forget what he said already). But, he recommended lowering the water level so it's only 1/2 way up the sightglass. We'll give it a try. Good luck!

As long as you can see the water level in the glass tube, it is not too high.
I usually tell my clients to keep it in the upper third of the glass.
Was it the same plumber that installed the boiler?

Master Plumber, since you entered this thread, we are very happy with your company (Gateway), which installed our new boiler one winter ago. If indeed our water level is not the problem, do you have any thoughts on what might be creating this nightly symphony?

There are several reasons why steam systems make noise.
I'll private line you now and we'll come up with a solution as soon as possible.
