My neighbor had a problem with her tiled shower floor coming up, so she called a local contractor. They ripped the floor up down to the very bottom & had a plumber put a new shower pan in.

The contractor came back and did the mud thing yesterday & is supposed to start the tile on Monday.

Here's where it gets weird....

Her mud floor looks nothing like mine did when we did our shower. Instead of gray cement, it's white Thinset. The Thinset isn't smooth & sloping to the drain; it's full of little grooves & swirls. It also comes just to the top of the drain. Another problem is that the tile & cement board were removed just high enough to get the new shower pan in.

I, of course, now consider myself an expert () so I asked her these questions:

1. How will the contractor be able to install the new cement board & seal it properly without ripping up more tiles?

2. Can they rip up more tiles without damaging the pan?

3. Are the grooves and dips supposed to be in the Thinset?

4. Will they be able to tile smoothly over the Thinset? Is the drain high enough for a layer of tile?

I completely freaked her out & am now obligated to get some answers for her before Monday. I took pics to post, since my butt is now on the line.

Here is the drain and the hardened Thinset surface:

Here is where the sides of the shower pan meet the tile wall:

Please help me out here & give advice.

Based on your description, sounds like a Jersey Mud Job.

Tell your neighbour to start again.

Thats a disaster! Should NEVER be thinset -- its not the right material.

You (or neighbor) should post at johnbridge.com -- these tile guys will give the BEST opinions.

Well, the original contractor looked at the job and swears that Thinset is the only way to go. But, more research (thanks for the links) echos what has been said here.

What should her next step be?
