Our kitchen cabinets have a finish that does not have the typical look/feel of paint but they have recently started to peel like paint. any suggestions on what the finish might be or how to repair? |

Sounds like they were laminated over. You can investigate having them refaced? If you plan to stay in the house a while, I'd just get new cabinets. |

michael, thanks for the reply. the cabinets -- and the entire kitchen -- are only about 8 years old but were installed by the previous owner. i would really prefer to avoid paying for new cabinets just because the finish is peeling. is there no other choice? |

I have that same issue. My painter told me he can paint over them. They will be scraped and prepped well. I am going to do them in one of the whites and get new hardware. You can't beat the price and I'm told it will look 95% better. |

Laminate can be painted, however thermofoil can't, at least according to Consumer's Reports. If your cabinets are not flat slabs, the surface is probably thermofoil. Laminate is fairly thick, maybe 1/19th of an inch and can only be applied to a flat surface. |

sk8mom, can you give me name/contact for your painter? bobcat, i'm not sure if they are laminate or thermofoil. the cabinets are not entirely flat but they are simple with little detail. what to do with thermofoil? RE: Consumer Reports, was the review in print or online? It would be helpful for me to read.

Berry, CR had an article on kitchens several months ago. It is probably on line. but you have to pay a fee to use their site. The library probably has a copy.

Berry, my painter is Hugh Strong, 908-688-2586. I recommend him highly. He is doing another job at my house now so and I will ask him about the issue raised by Bobkat. He previously looked at my cabinets (they have detailing as well) and said they could be painted over. |

World of Color painted our cabinets. It was cheap -- under $200 I think and I think they look great. |

Check out this webpage -- http://www.paintstore.com/drpaint/24496.html re thermofoil. (they make the point elsewhere that what's the harm in trying to paint your cabinets if they look bad. It will probably solve the problem at least in the short-term) I couldn't find laminate vs. thermofoil on the CR website 8/04 kitchen edition. |

TS and I examined the cabinets very closely last night. TS sees brush marks and insists the finish is enamel, meaning paint. The finish is high gloss and thick. The cabinets are only about 8 years old and -- from a distance -- do not appear painted (there are no drip marks, the finish seems to have been applied very evenly, etc.). Are there exceptionally high gloss paints that could have been applied by a professional painter? |

berry - Our cabinets in Maplewood had a rather thick, very high gloss finish that appeared to be "painted on" as imitation wood-tone or wood-grain over regular paint. We were renting so never tried to paint over it, but it sounds like what you have. This was applied before 1990, don't know when. |
