We have grey tile in part of our home that somebody refered to as aesbestos tile. The tile is in good shape and not chipping so I figure so long as anything is not airborne, we're OK. I'm curious if others have experience with this kind of tile. Is the aesbestos in the tile or the tar they used to set it? If I cover it over with carpet, are we OK, or do we need to tear up the whole thing? Curious what people think. |

I believe most of the asbestos is in the backing, but may be in the tile and the adhesive as well. A buddy of mines first job was as a salesman for Congoleum Nair. Part of his sales pitch was to flex a tile and say "and look at the creamy white asbestos backing." If the tile is in good shape I wouldn't feel any compulsion to take it up. The asbestos is "encapsalated" and not a danger to anyone. |

We took up the asbestos tile in our Maplewood room when we first moved in. For us, the expensive part wasn't the removal but leveling off the sloping floor by rebuilding the subfloor and then finishing it with wood to match the rest of the floors in our house. This after sistering some cracked joists in the ceiling above and removing the clapboard and replacing it with drywall. In part we didn't want to assume that during construction the tiles wouldn't get cracked creating a bigger problem. Removal for a small room (13 x 10) took less than a 1/2 day, I think, and, unlike many other contractors, they left no mess! For me, taking up the tiles was a no-brainer since I wanted the wood floors and the word asbestos gives me the heebie-jeebies!

Spare-o, who did you use? I believe I have asbestos tiles I need to remove. I am looking to get an estimate for a room roughly 500 square feet. |

Done this in the basement, and porch. General rule is that where it is in bad condition, ie. coming up, you want to pull up the tile. Make sure that whoever you use then seals the floor. Our underflooring was concrete. They sealed it by painting/smearing on a white pasty looking coating. Doesn't look great, but it can be painted over, or carpeted over. |

We used D&S Abatement in Totowa. Don't have the number on me at the moment. Good luck! |
