I have been given a couple names of contractors by neighbors and from this board. Not as many as I'd hoped for, but that's OK.

One guy has two good references from neighbors, but one other said she thought that they had been sued recently by an unhappy customer. She admits that she might have the names mixed up.

I've asked around, and no one else seems to know anything about them one way or the other. I don't want to post the contractor's name.

Is there a way to find out? I searched the following terms on Google: (contractor's name), lawsuit, judgement, Essex County courts, etc. All I get are links to how to navigate the court system. I hope I never have to use those links, but I'd like to find someway to know for sure about this guy. I don't want to ask him because I think that would be a weird way to start a project.

Chances are, if the contractor has been in business for any amount of time, he/she has been sued. That's simply the nature of the business. Of course, some lawsuits are more meritorious than others, but I don't think there's any way to really learn that sort of information.

Without goingt o some kind of expense it's very difficult as mwoodwalk said.
Lawsuits are thrown around like paper in the wind in this god awful business and generally amount to nothing unless it made the news that night.
In addition the law suit if any could be based on any umber of reasons that don't pertain tot he work it's self. Contractors get named in every siut, even when it's a manufacturers falult.
I can go on and on. I'd be happy to discuss this further if you wish.
Best to you.
