There is a French guy named Gil who is quite good. A lot of people have used him in Livingston and S.O. Don't have his number off hand, but I think he goes by the name Decks by Gil.

We used Ticos Carpentry..I've recommended them before on the board and they work with Rutgers Painting. They ripped out our outdated back porch and installed a nice 10'x 5' deck and patio door in November. The owner is Jorge and the number is 973-378-3530. Nice guys too and good clean up afterwards. They do other jobs too (if you ask)...we asked them about our interior basement door needing replacing and they took care of it right after they finished the big job. PL if you would like to see their work.

Average costs are $20-$30 per square foot for ACQ treated wood. If you decide on cedar and such, the costs increase.
Feel free to PL with any questions.
Best to you.

Deidra....can you post a picture of the deck? I'd love to see the work. Also, did you recieve other bids and get a sense of what the range of prices to be expected? We're currenlty looking to put on a similar deck ourselves. (12' X 8')

Steinism, act fast. Last year we tried to get a small deck done and couldn't even get a call back from people. They tend to gravitate to teh big jobs that cost lots of money!

i just recently had 4 contractors over to give me an estimate. only one, greenrose, actually came back with an estimate. i have not heard from the others in over 10 days. the greenrose estimate seemed radically high so i am still looking. if anybody has this Gil's info i would appreciate it.

Don't forget to contact the building department before you start - lot coverage percentages set what size, if any, deck you can build.

Not to harsh your mellow - but instead of a deck have you considered a patio?

It costs more initially, but the upkeep is minimal, and most old houses and backyards blend better with patios than decks.

Just a thought - I have a friend who is an architect that told me that decks break even at best when you're selling and patios can pay for themselves.

This advice is from a woman (me) who put in a very lovely and very expensive patio last summer, so take it with a grain of salt!

Here's a picture of the deck...(my apologies for taking the picture at night). If you can see, we are still a work in progress because we have to apply a sealer/stain and they also installed the patio door in the background. Ticos is VERY responsive and I have worked with enough carpenters to know they gave us the fairest price.

Oh! Here's another view....and notice the nice siding work they did after making the opening for the patio door.

If you do a search on past topics on decks there were many recommendations. When we put ours up we used Jarek. He was excellent. Many people in town have used him for work. Would highly recommend him to you.

We used Freeborne Construction (no number handy) and were very happy. Ours is a larger deck these pictures, with plenty of space to hang out. PL me if you want to see it.

It wasn't cheap, though. Large cedar deck, with benches and built in areas for potted plants.

But he did a great job.........very satisfied.
