Yesterday, a part of my ceiling collapsed and nearly missed hitting my son, who happened to step a way for second while working on the computer (thank God for angels watching over him). It fell on the spot where he was working.

We've live in this house for almost 11 years and noticed over the ceiling the previous owner had plastered over what was possibly some cracks. (They textured the ceiling to hide the imperfections.) Of course, a bedroom is up above, so I don't know if the pressure or something caused the collapse. (The house is almost 100 years old. )

When I heard the bang, I thought my roof caved in, thats how loud it was. We may have to take the ceiling down and that plaster is heavy.

Any recommendations or suggestions of contractors would be greatfully appreciated!

THANKS!

Since you will probably want to pull down the whole ceiling (I know I would after something like that) and replace it with sheetrock people such as World of Colors and Pintona specialize in that sort of thing. On the bright side you will get rid of the texture.

Maybe there really are Guardian Angels, and I don't mean Curtis and the gang. :-)

Phenix -
we have slowly been replacing textrued ceilings (never had one fall, usually get to it first). I accidentally found out that what Bob suggests is the fastest way to get it done.

Several years back, we tried to get a contractor for 2 months to rock our bedroom ceiling, but they all were scheduled well in advance. A friend suggested calling World of Colors, which we wouldn't have thought of.

Painters may be busy, too, but I think that they are used to less expensive jobs anyway, and may be more quickly available.

Glad your son wasn't hurt!

We had World of Color replace our falling down textured ceiling. I've been very happy with everything they do!

Try Pintona also. They did our kitchen ceiling, hall way and a bedroom and we were pretty pleased with the results.

You should try to figure out the cause of the problem before sheetrocking over it as well. Maybe a leaky radiator pipe or something up there seeped into the plaster and compromised its integrity. We had such a problem which resulted in cracking and eventually some falling plaster. It happens more slowly than you would think. Try to find the root cause.

Snow & Ice , probably on the north side of your roof is being melted by the heat from your house then re- freezing in the night lifting up shingles , it then melts again seeping onto your ceiling .
