We just moved to Maplewood recently and we need a good plumber. Can anyone recommend a competent, trustworthy plumber other than Todd Williams? I've called CT Williams twice in the past month and I can't seem to get anyone to call me back. Perhaps he's not accepting new business . . . |

Gateway is indeed highly skilled, and if I were in a mess they are who I would call. For anything even remotely routine, however, I'd look elsewhere. While I was very happy with the results, Gateway is the most expensive plumber I've ever used. |

We've used Gelman and found them very reliable. They've steered us away from expensive work and offered less expensive solutions more than once. |

Gateway. Not cheap but worth it. I know the owner personally and hold him and his company in extremely high esteem. |

We just used Gateway and my wife, who was the one home when they came, raved about how great they were. The work was done quickly, they cleaned up toatlly and I thougth the price was fair for what they did. |

I've used both Gateway and Gelman. Gelman costs two or three times as much as Gateway. Comparing quotes on a new shower pan - Gateway's coming in at 1/3 the price of Gelman. Gelman helped me out of a really big jam and they're awesome guys. But Gateway seem very nice and come highly recommended for a fraction of the price. |

I really liked CT Williams and they did a few jobs for us when we moved in 4 years ago but it was just too much work to try to reach them or have them call us back. We switched to Gateway and have been very happy. They also have a very professional setup and someone will always call you back.

I had a bad experience with Gateway. They were very expensive, they did not clean up after themselves (I had to lug a toilet down my back stairs and clean up the mess they left in the bathroom). They charged me an amount that was for a days work $800 but were only there for the morning. It ended up being over $200 an hour. I asked the owner to call me to discuss the clean up problem and the costs and he NEVER got back to me. I called a few times and I was pleasant. I just wanted an explanation, that's all. I will NEVER use Gateway. Also, my friend moved in and had her ;lumbing redone by Gateway and they forgot connections and caused flooding in the house. It was terrible. She will never use Gateway, either. |

I remember your friend's job well although I wish I could forget it. As far as that goes, there was water damage for which the client was compensated in full. They have called us to do other work since then and we're grateful for their understanding. There is so much that can go wrong when dealing with plumbing and heating systems in these older homes it is a wonder our track record is as good as it is- that's not for lack of effort. Sometimes bad things happen, even to good plumbers...and good customers. I spoke to David about you and he assures me that the last time you two spoke, it seemed all your issues were resolved. That includes the job price, which you were quoted beforehand, as opposed to an hourly "time and material" rate. Eight hundred dollars is not a daily rate, and as the pendulum swings both ways, if your job would've taken two days, we would have honored our agreement as we do without exception. If you feel there are open issues, please feel free to contact him, or me, privately as you see fit, at your convenience. Gateway Plumbing & Heating

I can strongly recommend Corragio Brothers. Maplewood natives, I believe, too (now living in Chatham?). Anyway, I have had both Joe and his brother to the house -- their workmanship is top notch, I believe their prices very fair. When I've had an emergency and used their pagers -- I've gotten prompt return calls and great service. Only other plumber I've had experience with is Gelman -- and would *never* call them again (agree with the other poster -- same work at multiples of prices). Pete |

CT Williams just did a very nice job for me, but I have to agree that it is very hard to get him to return messages left on his machine. I want something else done that his men know about, and I have called twice without a callback. I suppose it is because he has a small shop and lots of business, but he should call and explain his situation, especially to customers who have used him previously. |

I also recommend Corragio Brothers. Very good. I also like Gateway, although they are a bit pricey. We like their customer service, and everyone is very friendly. They are also very cautious, sometimes to a fault. Our bathtub was stopped and they did not want to snake it for fear of bursting a pipe. They did, however, recommend replacing the entire tub (which is a little rusted) and all the pipes for a cost of almost $3500 (not including patching up the wall and fixing the tile). I called Corragio Brothers - they looked at it and thought the pipes looked fine for a snake. The tub works great now and the brothers saved me from spending several thousand dollars. The tub and pipes should eventually be replaced, but it didn't have to be this month. |

We were not happy with Gelman's at all! We had a leak from the sink in one of our bathrooms and called Gelman's. Twice someone came and was unsuccessful at repairing the leak. Then THREE times the plumber simply did not show up after making appointments. Finally we phoned Weltman, who came within 24 hours and fixed the problem in less than an hour. By-the-way, although they never bothered to phone us again from Gelman's, we did receive a bill for the work they did. Weltman's is wonderful although very expensive! |

MP-I appreciate your response but I need to set the record straight-1) You did honor the errors of your work and fix the problem, but my friend has not used your company again. Maybe you are thinking of a different customer. 2) David never called me and resolved the question I had. I can appreciate how the estimate was made and that if there had been an unforseen complication it was part of that. With old houses, it certainly happens. I am responsible for agreeing to the estimate. In my haste to get it done and the fact that your crew was in my house I didn't seek other estimates for "convenience." That is on me. However, we had agreed to the cleanup and it was not done. For top dollar, the customer ought not be lugging toilets down stairs just to safely use the steps! I think you agree. I'm sure that you otherwise do good work and it is nice that you participate in the local forum. |

I agree Gateway is very good. You can trust them. Sometimes, it's worth it to pay top dollar, because they do the job right. We have also had excellent service from Premier Plumbing and Heating 973-509-0252 They installed a boiler for us, did it in less than the estimated time and at less than the estimated cost. |

Another vote here for Ronnie of M-SO Sewer, 973 313 9093. I called and left a message earlier today (Saturday), and he got back to me in 5 minutes. I explained my problem (kitchen sink drain blockage), and he told me he'd be here in half an hour. I didn't check the time, but I think it was less than that before he showed up with a co-worker. They used their power auger to clear the line all the way to the sewer, charged me $85 bucks (I was prepared to pay considerably more if necessary), and replaced a washer on the trap and the thingamadoohicky (he called it something else that I forget) that screws down on the washer at no charge. He said he lives in my neighborhood (I'm on Tuscan Road in Maplewood). I'm very happy to give my custom to a neighbor. We've also used Gahm Plumbing (973-762-6522) for a fairly big job in the past and been happy with them, but when I called today the voicemail told me I wouldn't get a call-back until Monday. |

CT WILLIAMS ALL THE WAY! We moved to Maplewood long before the Midtown Direct and they have been there for every emergency. Every time we call we get a call back almost immediately. Ask for him to do the job because his assistant always complains about how the job is "not easy". He still gets the job done tho. |

I think some of the differences of opinions about certain larger plumbing companies has to do with the crew that actually does the job. Some are better than others IMHO. We had work done by Gateway and when there was a problem they stood by their work and re-did what was neccessary, but honestly I think the crew that did the original work and also did the fix were not tops. The guy actually swept all the debris (including fiber board and metal pieces)into our sump hole. My husband had to wet-vac out the debris and actually jiggle something loose from the pump when it stopped working the evening the work was done. Either stupidity, laziness or sour grapes. |

Whatever you do, STAY AWAY from Korn Plumbing. I had Gary Korn come over to do two estimates for me - one was the shower pan and the other was a sink leak. We decided to only do the sink leak with him and he flat out refused to come unless I gave him the bigger job! He was angry that I was giving the 'meat and potatoes' job to someone else and he was only getting the scraps. When I told him that I wanted to see how he did on the sink leak first before I hired him for a $3,000 job he just became angry and yelled at me. Total loser, stay away. |

What is a good number for a shower pan? We just moved in and discovered that what looked like a relatively recently done shower pan may been done incorrectly. There is a crack in the grout and seepage showing on the ceiling below. A post elsewhere makes me think our predecessors may have paid for a "jersey mud job." |
