In my house, there are wooden double front doors, about 30 years old.

The weather tripping is metal -- almost appears to be lead, very pliable metal. The pieces on the door and the casing are complementary -- on the door there is a straight edge that is recessed into the door (routed edge), on the frame or casing what I can best desribe as a flange that "hooks" around the straight edge.

First , it does not work very well -- lots of air seepage, secondly, I wonder if it is lead, that having it on a front door that gets used so much isn't eventually a health hazard (from touching, abrasion).

Does this type of weather stripping sound familiar? If I remove it from the doors, I would be left with a recessed/routed edge.

Any ideas for a replacement in some other material? (Home Despot has nothing that would appear to me to be a reasonably easy DIY retrofit).

Thanks --
Pete

I doubt it's lead. If anything it's tin. As for health hazards. Don't smoke it or eat it.
Can you post a pic? I have an idea but would like to see it.

Pete,

sounds just what we have on our door. I would assume it is tin, as MMK said.

I'd be curious how to improve this myself, even though from your description our's does seem to work better then yours.

I found adding one of those rubber strips at the bottom of the door, and an insulated mail drop both made a huge difference.

Thanks guys -- I'll PL you Happyman - tonight.

Earlster, thanks for reminding me about the mail slot. My mail slot "insulation" is a rolled up towel that the mail man pushes in!

I'm also wondering rather than putz with the little fixes --whether a new Andersen or Pella double glass storm door would help at this point!

Pete
