Has anyone signed up for this offer for "protection" for our Sewer lines from New Jersey American Water? I got an offer in the mail for Sewer Line Protection. |

NJ American is not in the "sewer" business. It is in the "water" business. Maybe what you are looking at is insurance for the lateral line from the water main to your house. If so, it is a good deal. |

wmarion is right. I received the same offer for sewer line protection. Apparently they are in the insurance business. Must be pretty profitable. |

Sounds like a grand scam to me. The chances of "just breaking" a water line are slim. And, if it does break, depending on the cause, it could be covered under your homeowner's policy. Regardless of the premium, I would never buy the insurance. |

If you haven't got a copper water main, I think the water line protection is a great deal. I see old lead, brass and galvanized services all the time that have long passed their life expectancy and they definitely do "just break" all the time. I'd skip the sewer protection unless you have reason to think you have an existing problem. As for your homeowner's policy covering the repair - I've never heard of that. I do know that pipe repairs inside the house aren't covered. (But the resulting damage usually is) |

mine broke and it flooded the basement. The real cute part is that it has to be shut off at the sidewalk or the water just keeps coming in. The insurance paid for, I think, a third of the line work outside and any damage inside. |

We have coverage for both the Water & Sewage lines. I think it's well worth the low cost it! |

I'd say "get it." We lived in a 1930's colonial for 18 years and then two years ago moved to a "newer" home for different layout, different commute, and need for less space. Just recently I saw the front lawn of our old house torn up to the street, and when I stopped and asked the "new" owner, with whom we're quite friendly, he said the line "just broke" on the house side of the box, which means that it is the homeowner's responsibility. Coverage like this would have been useful. We bought it for our new house pronto. |

We were advised at our inspection (over 5 yrs ago now) that the main line to the street was the original galvanized steel pipe, that they eventually corrode and have to be replaced w/ copper. Now we are experiencing reduced water pressure and the plumber advises replacement of the main line. Apparently the pipe corrodes inside and clogs. He is estimating around $2400 including earth moving and backfill, but not landscaping). I have seen the NJAWC program advertised, but can't remember the details. What is the price? Waiting period? (and, of course, they probably subcontract out to who knows?) "wear and tear" like this will not be covered by homeowners insurance, naturally. Any thoughts/info? |

I highly recommend that you get the water service line coverage. Not sure about the sewer line, though. Our water service line burst in December and, of course, no coverage. It cost us over $4K (we have yet to do the landscaping on the areas that were dug up) to have it replaced. |
