I know this has been discussed before, but please indulge me. In preparation for the monster kichen renovation, I absolutely need to upgrade from 100 to 200 amp service.

What should I expect to pay for this?
Please suggest electricians that are best suited to this type of job. I am not really sure what to expect. thanks

I just did this last week. We used Ore Electric and the cost was $1800.00. We needed to replace our panel so decided we may as well upgrade the service at the same time.

We use Eddie Ore for all our electrical needs; he did our service upgrade about 4-5 years ago. He also did all the electrical in our recent renovation. I can't tell you the cost because we always have him do multiple things. He ain't the cheapest, but (IMHO) he is the best.

We got him from mutual friends - the gals in W.O - & you know if he keeps those perfectionists happy, he's got to be good.

Thanks Greentree. I actually had him here about 2 years ago when I first entertained doing the upgrade. I don't recall his price. Can you forward me his #. This time I HAVE to go through with it.

If you want estimates I would recommend MGM Properties. Monica and her workers are very thorough, on time, and professional. I had a panel that the house inspector and two other electricians thought was a 200 amp panel, but were wrong. They weren't thorough. In fact it was quite an old and dangerous panel. Monica was the only one who correctly identified the inadequate and potentially dangerous old panel.

If you have a 100 amp service now you'll probably need to have the SER, meter and pan changed as well. The $1,800.00 mentioned above doesnt include this.

Mac-
Eddie's number is at home. I'll PL you this weekend, along with an update about the other stuff.

BTW - I think you know Monica, too. You may have met her at a party at my house a few years ago. I've heard good things about her as an electrician. We didn't use her for two reasons: long time, happy customers of Eddie's and we don't hire friends/social acquaintances (recipe for disaster, IMHO).

Michael - We have a big shiny, new meter outside - is that what you mean? Please explain. What is the SER and pan?

Macman - Eddie's number is 973 762 1172.

I am actually finishing up a big kitchen renovation project I'm doing myself and just had Monica from MGM over last night to get an estimate for upping our service from 100 to 200. She actually talked me out of doing it. She said it wasn't a bad idea to up the service, but that it also wasn't necessary. Our stove, hot water heater and dryer are all gas and we don't have central air, so in the end our electrical demands didn't dictate getting the service upgraded, so instead she is just installing a sub-panel to take care of the additional circuits from the kitchen.

The prices were $1900 for the service upgrade and $420 for the new sub-panel.

Are you sure you need to upgrade the service?

Either way, Monica was great. She hasn't done the work yet, but I have good feeling about her.

SER or SEC (Service entry cable) is what comes off the pole down to the meter.
If the existing cable is not rated for 200 amp you'll need to change it out from the weather head down or possible to the pole. This should be brought up when looking to swap out a panel.
Feel free to PL with questions or concerns.
Good luck.

Macman--we've been using Craig Bradley to do some electrical work for us--he's done an excellent job and is especially good with older houses. His number is 973-763-4232.

And BTW, we got the same response as Valentine when we inquired about upping our service a few years back. Not a bad idea, but not at all necessary. That electrician (whose name I don't remember) put in a new panel, and we've had no problems at all since.

Thanks everyone.
I am sure I need to upgrade.
Would like to add the dual fuel range.
And, with code requirements, I will need numerous additional circuits in the kitchen. My current box is maxed out. Yes, I am aware that you can duplex about 40% of the slots, but I have maxed that out too.

We've used Craig Bradley as well. He's very busy, but otherwise very easy to work with and professional. We're glad we found him.

We just did this a couple of months ago and used Stacey Electric for a total of appoximately $2,000. They were extremely efficient and friendly.

We had our panel replaced, upgraded to 200 amp service, and had a new meter installed for a total of $1375 with Swanstrum (or Swanstrom?) Electric. Were very satisfied with the work.

We got estimates from 5 different people, and this one was the lowest by several hundred dollars.
