We are in the process of getting bids for kitchen renovation. Our kitchen size is about 9X12 and we have simple base and upper cabinets to install. No stacking of cabinets etc.
One of the bids was $4000 just for cabinet installation. Is this even in the ballpark? We had been told that the price to install cabinets would be around $1500 or $2000 max.
Also advice on how to approach the contractor with this will be welcome

Thanks

$4,000.00 does sound like a bit too much. But, I haven't see it. In most cases the install runs about $1,500.00 +/-. The costs do increase if your walls require some assistance in order to achieve a perfect flush, level and plumb finish or if there's trim ie. crown molding to be installed.

That price is crazy............

Should be $1200.00 to $1400.00 tops with crown moulding. $4000.00 is just nuts.

I heard that there are availability issues with Ikea. I have priced out a whole range of ikea cabinets for my kitchen. However, I have not gone in to the store to talk with anyone.
Are they available readily? I will still need someone to install them...
I am going to IKEA this weekend...

I believe IKEA offers installation service or probably, more correctly, will put you in touch with contractors who instal their products.

We thought that we were going to do a light remodel--new cabinets, new appliances, no floor, no wall removal. Our kitchen is 9 X 12, too. We looked at IKEA, but had problems when their standard designs would not fit our kitchen. We went to Home Expo, and the process got much more expensive. We went with Maax cabinets, similar in price to Kitchen Maid. They were about $9,000. If you are going to use the cabinets a lot, do check out Valentine's Consumer Report list.

But to answer your question, the installation of the cabinets cost us $3400. Home Expo is notorious for high markups, but we went with them because the financing was easy. However, don't forget other expenses that will probably not be included in the cabinetry installation--plumbing under the sink, new electrical outlets, blacksplashes, etc. Our entire kitchen, soup to nuts (although we did not need to update our electrical board or put in new floors) ran more than $35,000 for the kitchen and breakfast room. We found it hard to find a contractor who felt that $35,000 was a worakable budget.

IKEA does supply contractor names who will work with you. But expect to get in a long waiting line for your start date.

I think Ikea said we could expect the installation to cost in the neighborhood of 75% of the cost of the cabinets, but I could be wrong.

I gotta tell you though, I installed the cabinets myself and it really could not have been any easier.

Also, it took them about a week and half to deliver the cabinets. It is kind of intimidating when you order about 15 cabinets and it comes in about 60 flat boxes.

IKEA stocks their basic cabinets and when I was there a few weeks ago I was told it would take 10 days to get other styles.

Thanks all...
Dicksson
The quote of $4k was just for cabinets..The plumbing, electric, backsplash all have separate line items....
Our cabinet costs are pretty low - around 5k for kraftmaid and around 2.5k for ikea..

For a similarly sized, L-shaped kitchen (and without the benefit of CR) we chose the Kraft Maid line from Home Depot, and despite problems that others have with that store, we found the kitchen design folks very helpful and fun to work with. The computer program they use allowed us to "play with" several overall design ideas, and although the cabinet sizes were not quite so flexible as a true custom job, we were able to get a lot in to a small space.

Price for the cabinetry itself was quite reasonable (can get specific but have to look it up in our files), and installation (two years ago) was about $1000 by a contrator who was doing other stuff for us as well. I agree with Dicksson in that you have to allow for extra costs such as electrical (including lighting), plumbing, floor and backsplash, etc...
