I want to remove the vinyl siding on my house and try to restore the old wooden clapboard underneath. Any suggestions for someone who can remove the siding?

Thanks

I saw Rutgers doing this to a house on Valley Street last year. I believe it was the first house on the right after Baker Street as your traveling towards Springfield on Valley. It's a greenish brown color and looks so much better than it did before the work.

At a minimum they'll have to fill A LOT of nail holes before painting. The siding and trim may also need work if they had deteriorated or were destroyed when the vinyl siding was installed.

But...it will look great when done. Good luck!

Three cheers for you, Abn! Vinyl siding is evil and should be banned. Removing the siding isn't generally too big a deal, but depending on what you find underneath, you may have some work to do before repainting.

If you're lucky, you'll just have to deal with nail holes and restoring exterior window casings. I know Old House people who've actually uncovered elaborate gingerbread detail in mint condition.

On the downside, siding has a nasty habit of disguising insect and water damage. But far better to find it and fix it now, before it causes real trouble.

I imagine that anybody who does exterior carpentry could give you a quote on this if you don't want to take it on yourself.

Take photos!!

Unfortunately a lot of vinyl jobs involve cutting off details such as the "horns" at the bottom of windows and other such shortcuts that can be expensive to fix.

I don't believe that Rutgers removes siding, we had a quote from them a couple of years ago, and they said at that they don't remove siding.
