A contractor I've spoken with about repaving our driveway has told me that it is a good idea to rip up the driveway, lay down the stone gravel and then let it settle in for at least a month before putting on the asphalt. That way, the newly-shifted earth and the gravel settle down, and you can avoid cracks in the asphalt. Does this sound right? |

Yes! My folks had their driveway done 10 years ago. More like 2 weeks but it still looks as good as new. I need a new one myself and would ask a contractor to do the same. Good luck! |

Anybody know how pavers work in this area? It's a popular driveway approach in more temperate zones, but I'm beginning to see them hereabout too. |

We used Essex and Morris contracting to repave our driveway. Despite the two or three week settling time, we did get a sizable crack down the middle of the driveway.....but I won't blame the contractors. It all started when PSE&G wanted to replace a water meter in the basement. The old water line meter was so old that the on/off handle snapped off in the guy's hand. Then the pipe snapped off at the floor. This required digging up, and replacing, the entire water line to the curb. They trashed the existing driveway....I decided to completely remove it and start fresh when they asked me what I wanted to do with the old oil tank they also just discovered!! After the tank was removed, the earth all tamped down, gravel put down and the wait period (3 weeks?) they paved. It seemed a prudent amount of time. We still got the crack right where they took out the tank however. |
